KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has made a comeback in the local government by-elections as it grabbed 10 out of 22 seats in Karachi, including one chairman, two vice chairmen and six councilors.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has won eight seats, including two chairmen, one member of the district council and five councilors, while the Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Awami National Party (ANP) could get only one seat each in the by-elections held on Dec 23.

According to provisional and unofficial results, the PPP suffered an upset in Malir on the district council seat vacated by its MNA Jam Abdul Karim Bijar.

This seat was won by independent candidate Asad Abdul Rasool who bagged 2,013 votes against PPP’s Irfan Ahmad Jokhio.

The PTI lost the seat of chairman vacated by its MPA Shah Nawaz Jadoon in UC-45 Sikandarabad to PPP’s Abdul Malik.
