Honorary Consul General Mian Mehmood hosted a reception at Serena Hotel recently to celebrate Moldova’s national day. The chief guest on the occasion was Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Khan Afridi.

The event was also attended by former prime minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and dignitaries from Pakistan and abroad.

“I was very glad to attend the event,” said Belarus ambassador Andrey Ermalovich.

“I served in Moldova earlier in my career, and I have very fond memories from my time in the country,” he said.

Moldova is a small country to the south west of Ukraine and to the east of Romania, near the Black Sea. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Moldova gained its independence in 1991 with a new constitution from 1994.

The country has a small population of 3.3 million people and is one of the very poorest countries in Europe.

It is estimated that a quarter of the people work abroad and emigration is a problem.

Agricultural productivity is high on fertile land, but service industries have also grown. Moldova has universal literacy and good higher educational institutions.
