KARACHI: Senior director, health and medical services department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Dr Birbal Genani paid a surprise visit to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where only two consultants were present on duty. During his visit Dr Genani reached the hospital at 8.45am and no one from the administration, including the medical superintendent of ASH, was found on duty.

He also inspected various departments, including the blood bank, lab, and emergency. It was observed that the chief nursing superintendent office was found closed and additional medical superintendent Dr Rizwan reached the hospital at 9.30am.

During the visit, the senior director health found OPD patients present but no doctors was found available on call. Only two consultants, one neurosurgery department and one from the medical side were present.

The emergency department, renovated by Bahria Foundation, was found to be neat and clean, and sanitary workers were found working. He also checked the attendance of staff and warned that strict departmental action would be taken against absent staff.

Dr Birbal Genani strictly directed Dr Rizwan and chief nursing superintendent to take interest in their job, and ensure cleanliness of the hospital.
