ISLAMABAD: Chairman of Senate Standing Committee on Interior Rehman Malik, who was nominated by the upper house as coordinator to monitor and oversee the July 25 general elections, has urged Prime Minister Imran Khan to constitute a committee for investigation into complaints of rigging in the elections.

Addressing a press conference at his residence here on Sunday, he said that Parliament of Pakistan had the right to oversee and monitor the elections, therefore, the Senate Standing Committee on Interior was nominated by the upper house to oversee and monitor the recently held elections and its security.

He said the committee had held seven meetings to oversee and monitor the election — four meetings before the election and three after it.

The meetings reviewed security arrangements on polling day and considered complaints of irregularities.

“In this regard, the committee has submitted second progress report to the upper house enlisting all components and progress achieved so far. The committee will again meet soon to review the reports of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Nadra, Cabinet Division and all other stakeholders regarding complaints and reservations of political parties,” he said.

Mr Malik claimed that the committee had done a great job by investigating the complaints technically.

“We have completed almost 80 per cent work and we are working over it day and night. The committee will continue parliamentary investigations as we are very much concerned over the failure of Result Transmission System (RTS) and other irregularities reported,” he said.
