ISLAMABAD: A spokesman of the Pakistan Post Office here today [Aug 8] denied the Indian report that postage stamps worth Rs. 75 lakh were missing from the Khulna post office in East Pakistan.

Commenting on the report broadcast by All India Radio, the spokesman said that during the routine verification of accounts of the Khulna head post office some shortage of stamps was recently detected. The extent of loss, he said, amounted to a few thousand rupees only and not to Rs. 75 lakh as reported by All India Radio. The maximum authorised stamp balance of the post office, it said, was fixed at about Rs. 50,000 only.

The spokesman said that the Indian claim that this is the world’s biggest postal theft so far is, therefore, a fantastic lie. — Agency

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Muzaffarabad,] Spokesman of the Azad Government of Jammu and Kashmir State has described as “mischievous and fantastic” the Indian propaganda alleging that the inhabitants of Hajipir area “held a demonstration against the corrupt officials before the President of Azad Kashmir who visited that area recently”. He was commenting on a report published in Indian and occupied Kashmir newspapers.
