MQM confirms support to PTI in exchange for federal package for Karachi

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Friday inked an agreement with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), promising to extend its support to the latter for the formation of government in the Centre, DawnNewsTV reported.
In exchange for MQM-P’s support for the upcoming federal government, PTI promised that a special federal package will be announced for Karachi, with an emphasis on the provision of water for its residents.
Additionally, the PTI agreed that Sindh police reforms will be implemented, a university will be established in Hyderabad, and constituencies identified by MQM-P will also be audited, according to the contents of the memorandum of understanding.
“The agreement was a constitutional and democratic necessity,” said MQM leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.
Earlier on Wednesday, the MQM-P had announced its decision to support the PTI for the formation of the upcoming federal government. The party has won six National Assembly (NA) seats in the July 25 election.
Other parties that won NA seats and have declared their support for PTI include Pakistan Muslim League-Q with four seats; Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) with two; Balochistan Awami Party with four; Awami Muslim League and Jamhoori Watan Party with one seat each.
GDA’s head Pir Sibghatullah Rashidi, also known as Pir Sahab Pagara, also telephoned Jahangir Tareen to declare his support for Imran Khan.
Moreover, nine independents have joined PTI so far. Their names are Sanaullah Mustikhel, Basit Bukhari, Saleh Muhammad Khan, Fakhar Imam, Muhammad Amjad Farooq, Abdul Ghafar Wattoo, Asim Nazir Shabbir Qureshi, and Ali Mohammad Mehr.
The PTI won 115 NA seats, but due to an error which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) admitted on Friday, the party's tally for elected members stands at 116.
Issuing a statement of clarification, the commission said that the similarly named Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaniyat did not win a seat in the National Assembly and the win attributed to it earlier actually belongs to PTI, thereby bringing the latter's initial tally to 116. "We made a mistake in reporting the data," the commission stated.
With the support of independents and other parties, PTI will have a coalition of 143 seats in the Centre.
Jahangir Tareen during a media conference said, "Out of the 13 independent candidates for the National Assembly, nine have joined PTI."
"We are in touch with Ali Nawaz Shah from Sindh as well as Shahzain Bugti. Also, talks are underway with Akhtar Mengal," he added.

A win- win for everyone!
This is very significant, especially for both PTI and MQM if they can transform Karachi and make it a more livable and attractive city. It would be rubbing in the face of PPP who could not manage the main city under its control in decades. It is better for MQM to also raise its profile and prove to the people that it has moved away from vile and turbulent past of Altaf Hussain and is a significant civic force to provide basic services to the citizens of the city. It may not get another chance like this. Any success will be a feather in the cap for both the Kaptan and MQM

There must be a law to provide facilities to the tax paying region from the amounts collected from the same before doling out such collection to other regions. The MQM and PTI should ensure such enactment of law to be fair to the tax payers of the country. Karachi does not need packages from either the federal or provincial governments. It wants its fair share out of the revenues collected from its citizens. Other regions in the country must also pay their dues to the governments. Living on alms and taxes paid by others should be discouraged at all levels. Provision of jobs in government organizations should not be treated as the birth right of any group or tribe or citizens of any area.

It seems this deal will do good for Karachi.Whatever will be in the package every penny spent out of it needs to be counted and audited. This alliance in which the partners come together for a good cause based on principles is a win-win for all. Compare this to so-called grand opposition alliance where the goal is to simply throw roadblocks in smooth power transition, cry and complain about their election losses and bad mouth the opponents inside and outside the honourable institute of the Assembly.
I have yet to see any kind of useful plan come out of PPP/PMLN/MMA alliance other than fight and tussle to get back power with the selfish run-ups and announcements to who will get the PM speaker and deputy speaker positions.

Big mistake to give mqm any form of life line.
They want the Ports and Shipping ministry which is like feeding blood to a dead vampire. Babar Ghauri and mqm became robbers and murderers, holding Karachites to ransom. This ministry is a big earner and Pakistan will not see a paisa if IK gives it to mqm.
IK should remember the Late Zahra Apa. She was an urdu speaking head of women's wing of PTI in Karachi. She was brutally murdered by mqm hitmen. Two mqm killers on a motorbike entered her drive as she was returning and they shot her in cold blood.
Lets not forget who the mqm is.
Imran Khan, Zahra API's blood will be on your hands if you foolishly revive this killer looter group.

Local govt needs local funding through collection of property taxes. Provincial govt. Should not have a stake in this nor should the national govt. They can support larger projects throughout the country but local accountability is paramount.
