KARACHI: Police on Wednesday booked former Pakistan ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani for his “anti-Pakistan” interview to foreign media that could compromise the country’s security.

Preedy police registered the case against the former envoy on a complaint by advocate Moulvi Iqbal Haider, said Station House Officer Liaquat Hayat.

The case was registered under Sections 120-A (a definition of criminal conspiracy), 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), 121-A (conspiracy to commit offences punishable by Section 121) and 123-A (condemnation of the creation of the State, and advocacy of abolition of its sovereignty) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The complainant said he was sitting at the Sindh High Court bar room on March 7 when he came to know that the former diplomat had given an interview to print and electronic media in the US in which he uttered ‘strong words’ against the solidarity of the country.

He alleged that whether on his own or at the behest of anti-Pakistan forces, Mr Haqqani had “targeted Pakistan armed forces and tried to damage the Kashmir cause”.

Mr Haider believed that the ex-diplomat’s interview came under the purview of a high treason act, saying that Mr Haqqani had committed serious offences against the solidarity, integrity, sovereignty and security of the state of Pakistan.
