PESHAWAR: The contractor executing the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project on Saturday said work on 960 of a total of 1,141 piers had completed.

In a statement issued here, BRT project manager Khalid Mukhtiar said the contractor had shifted heavy machinery and cranes to the project sites across the city to place girders on the piers to complete work on the project’s elevated sections.

He said the cranes, which had the capacity to lift up to 500 tons weight, would be used to place heavy girders on piers.

Mr Muktiar said the Khyber Road, which was recently made part of the BRT project, would be linked to the underground portion on the Amn Chowk Section.

He said around 90 per cent of the work on Reach-I from Chamkani to Balahisar had been completed, while the elevated section led the BRT service to Soekarno Chowk.

The project manager said a new flyover would be built to connect GT Road with Nishtarabad.

He said work on the project was underway round the clock in line with the government’s directions.

Mr Muktiar said the BRT project had been extended until the Bacha Khan International Airport.

He said around 50 per cent of work on the project’s Firdous-Amn Chowk portion had also been completed.

The project manager said of the 1,141 underground piers, 860 had been successfully laid down, while work on placing girders on piers would begin on Sunday.

He said the contractors had hired services of engineers to complete the project in light of the government’s directives.
