Lahore, Jhang institutes make it to math contest final

LAHORE: Regional winners in two categories of the Math Challenge 2018 Lahore were selected after tough preliminary and then regional rounds here on Thursday.

They included Sacred Heart Convent School of Lahore in class 7 & 8 category (Group 1) and Chenab College of Jhang in class 9 & 10 category (Group 2).

In Group 2 competition held on Thursday, 20 teams participated in the Preliminary Round of which eight qualified for the Regional Round. Whereas, the first round for Group 2 had been organised on Wednesday in which 25 teams took part and of them 12 teams qualified for the Lahore Regional Round. The Regional Rounds for both the categories were held on Thursday.

The regional winners in both groups (Sacred Heart Convent School Lahore in Group 1 & Chenab College Jhang in Group 2) have qualified for the national finals to be held in Karachi on Feb 24.

Dawn Math Challenge is jointly organised by Dawn Media Group and EDeQUAL and supported by Saniplast, MCB Arif Habib, Alif Ailaan, and Pakistan Alliance for Math and Science. The judges are provided by the Oxford University Press.

The runners-up teams in the regional rounds, Crescent Model School, Lahore; in Group 1 and Lahore Grammar School - 55 Main Gulberg, Lahore; in Group 2 were awarded shields and commendation certificates at a simple but impressive ceremony at the Ali Education Institute, the venue for the competitions.

The Dawn Math Challenge is a national inter-school competition for students providing them with a platform to demonstrate their intellectual, analytical and problem-solving skills using math. The competition is conducted by using the latest quiz technology systems.

More than 150 schools across Pakistan are participating in the contest. The first round was successfully completed in January, with each of the participating schools using a technology link-up that was managed by EDeQUAL. About 6,500 students from across schools in Karachi, Hyderabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Jhang, Islamabad and Peshawar had participated in the first round.
