STOCKHOLM: The 1967 Nobel Prize for Physics was today [Oct 30] awarded to Prof Haris A. Bethe of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. The prize was awarded to Prof Bethe for his contributions to the theory of nuclear reactions, especially his discoveries concerning the energy production in stars.
The Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded half of the Chemistry Prize to Prof Eigher of the Max Plame Physics and Chemistry Institute at Gottingen. The other half was shared by Prof Norrish of the Cambridge Institute of Physical Chemistry and Prof Porter of the London Royal Institute.
The three laureates were honoured for their studies of extremely fast chemical reactions effected by disturbing the equilibrium by means of very short pulses of energy.
The prizes this year, worth 328,000 Swedish crowns (some 66,000 dollars) will be awarded to the laureates at a ceremony here in December.
According to an Oslo report, the Norwegian Nobel Peace Committee announced today it had decided to reserve the Nobel Peace Prize for 1967. This means that for the second year in succession no peace prize would be awarded. — Agencies
[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Kathmandu,] hostile Naga tribesmen were reportedly building up their defences as the Indian authorities in Assam continued their frantic efforts to obtain a three-month extension of the ceasefire, according to Indian Press reports from Imphal [Oct 30].
A meeting of Naga leaders was recently held at Toloi in Ukhrul subdivision under the presidentship of Mr Phani Tphang, described as the Commissioner of the area under the Federal Government of Nagaland to discuss the situation and strengthen their army camps in three ceasefire-bound sub-divisions of Manipur with heavy reinforcements from Nagaland. These subdivisions are Ukhrul Mao and Tamenglong.
According to Press reports, four Naga army camps were set up at Kacha Ukhrul subdivision with over 60 armed Nagas in each camp. They were also reported to be setting an observation post with about 200 armed Nagas in a jungle area of Ukhrul.
