SIALKOT: A civilian was killed when the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) resorted to heavy mortar shelling in villages in Phookaliyaan-Bajwat sector along the Sialkot Working Boundary on Wednesday evening.

According to the villagers, heavy and small mortar shells rained down in the village streets as the BSF targeted civilians.

A mortar shell hit the house of a farmer — Zahur Elahi, 45, son of Ahmed Khan — in Diyaarwali-Kaliyaal village, killing him on the spot.

Reportedly, two head of cattle were also killed while dozens injured in the unprovoked attack.

Several houses were damaged as the intermittent shelling continued for an hour.

The Punjab Rangers responded to the shelling in a befitting manner, leading to the end of the Indian firing, said officials.
