RAWALPINDI: A death row prisoner committed suicide by hanging in his barracks in Central Jail Adiala, while another prisoner convicted of forgery died in the hospital on Friday, police said.

Mohammad Iqbal, who was sentenced to death for murder, hanged himself in his cell on Thursday. His death was confirmed by the prison doctor.

The motive behind the suicide could not be ascertained, but the brother of the deceased said in a statement that his brother had killed himself and was not tortured by anyone.

He also claimed that his brother had no enmity with anyone.

Separately, another prisoner died upon reaching the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) on Friday.

Qurban Hussain, who was convicted in a forgery case, was taken to Pims after his health deteriorated in prison. He died upon reaching the hospital.
