FAISALABAD: A suspect allegedly involved in the murder of retired professor of the Punjab Medical College Dr Mahmood Aleem committed suicide at district jail on Monday.

Ghulam Mohammadabad police arrested Irfanul Qamar and shifted him to district jail on Sunday as he had confessed to killing Dr Aleem with the help of his accomplice Amanullah.

Police registered a case against five people including Mr Qamar, his two sons and as many unidentified people under sections 109, 148, 149 and 302 of the PPC.

The district prison superintendent in a letter sent to the judicial magistrate asked for a probe into the incident. Prior to detaining Qamar at the jail, police kept him at the Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology due to heart disease.

Following his illness, he was kept at the prison hospital on the advice of jail’s medical officer, the letter said.

On Monday, Qamar hanged himself from the gratings by using his bed sheet, it said and added that the duty staff provided him with the required medical treatment but to no avail.

The jail superintendent has requested the magistrate to probe into the death of Qamar.

The body was shifted to the Allied Hospital for autopsy.

On July 25, retired professor Dr Aleem was shot at and injured by two unidentified motorcyclists near Akbarabad Chowk.

Dr Aleem was shifted to the Allied Hospital in a critical condition where he breathed his last.

A footage helped police trace the suspects who were also produced before the media during a press conference held by the SSP (operation) on Saturday last.
