SWABI: A detective force constable was martyred in a gun attack within the jurisdiction of the Chota Lahor city police station on Thursday, police said.

Swabi DPO Muhammad Sohaib Ashraf told Dawn that the constable came under attack near the Jaganat Bridge. He said it appeared to be a terrorist incident.

Haq Nawaz was from Adina village of Swabi district and joined the police in June 1996. Shah Nawaz Khan, his brother, is an assistant sub-inspector in the district police.

According to reports, two motorcyclists chased the constable before opening fire on him. Mardan’s Regional Police Officer Alam Shinwari, District Nazim Ameer Rehman, Swabi Deputy Commissioner Mutasim Billah Shah, the DPO, police officers and local political leaders attended the funeral in the Shah Mansoor area.

Later, the constable was buried with full honours at his ancestral graveyard in Adina. He leaves behind his widow, two sons and two daughters. An FIR was registered with the Chota Lahor city police station against unidentified attackers.
