GUJRAT: The Gujrat Municipal Corporation has purchased 72 motorcycle-rickshaws for as many wards of the urban union councils to lift garbage from congested streets and downtown areas of the city.

The three-wheelers have been purchased with Rs8.4m grant provided by the Punjab government. They will be used in 12 urban union councils of the municipal corporation where big vehicles can’t go.

The keys to the motorcycle-rickshaws were handed over to the sanitary staff in a ceremony held at the corporation office with Mayor Haji Nasir Mehmood as the chief guest.

Addressing the ceremony, he said the sanitary staff would lift the garbage from the downtown areas easily with the three-wheelers and dump it at the main dumping sites from where the heavy vehicles would lift it to take it outside the city.

Deputy Mayor Asif Raza and Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali were also present.
