The Government of Punjab is set to launch an "Orange Cab" scheme seeking to provide 100,000 cars to unemployed youth in the province.

"The Orange Cab scheme will be launched this year," the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was quoted as saying by the provincial government in a tweet.

Sharif expressed his desire to see the framework of the scheme developed electronically in order to restrict any possibility of mismanagement or corruption.

'"The scheme will provide 100,000 people with a source of income," he said, adding, "Previously, as part of the 'Apna Rozgar' scheme, the Punjab government has disbursed 50,000 cars to Punjab's young people."

CM Shahbaz Sharif stressed the importance of mobility as essential in helping young people secure a respectable source of income.

The Punjab government is known for its focus on expanding road infrastructure across Punjab's major cities.

With the Orange Cab scheme in the pipeline, the province may see a surge in the number of cars on its streets.

According to a survey conducted by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the total unemployment rate in Pakistan stood at 5.9 per cent, in 2014-15.

Woh the graduate, masters and PHD students will run these cars for money rather then working in the industry....PMLN masters at throwing dust in the eyes.

Faisal Apr 21, 2017 03:56pm

The only visionary leader in Pakistan. God bless mian sb.

WaLi Apr 21, 2017 03:57pm

Continued nice gimmicks making fool of people and rewarding cronies with some kickbacks with no intention of fixing the ills and chronic that keep on giving!

Sameer Apr 21, 2017 04:00pm

The 100000 are now unemployed and bank defaulters.

haroon Apr 21, 2017 04:01pm

@Faisal vision? God doesn't grant same sense or acumen to all. Same is the case with supporters like you. vision?. He has no vision. Same old techniques used as in 90's but face of economy is very different.

This is contractor mentality. You are a supporter of nothing

pakistan zindabad Apr 21, 2017 04:03pm

@Faisal ride these cars and make your children ride them too if you consider it as visionary thing.

Arshad Apr 21, 2017 04:06pm

Okay Okay, we know 2018 election is round the corner !!!

HIBISCUS Apr 21, 2017 04:07pm

I have heard leaders inspiring youths to innovate and be entrepreneurial. First time I am coming across a leader providing vehicles to encourage youth to become drivers and congest the road and continue polluting the environment. At least provide them with electric cars to raise awareness and be a change to develop the electric vehicle ecosystem. All the tax monies are being wasted in such non-visionary ideas.

sohail ahmed malik Apr 21, 2017 04:11pm

In-spite of spend billion of Rs. on this account govt. should encourage textile sector and industries where million of employment is seen.

Harmony-1© Apr 21, 2017 04:12pm

@Faisal - That's a cockeyed 'vision'.

Khurram Apr 21, 2017 04:20pm

@anees khan who the hell is driving careem and uber?

Waaris Apr 21, 2017 04:21pm

Another yellow cab scandal in the making!!

Blitz Apr 21, 2017 04:24pm

which cars ? Mehran & Balon ? which cost approx 0.8 million which AC, power steering and Air Bags (Basic needs). Ohhhh C'mon first review your AUTO policy then offer these kind of stuff. Build some good hospital some sports complex etc.

anees khan Apr 21, 2017 04:25pm

@Khurram i am sure not engineer, doctors,PHDS etc ...Uber and careem are just part can not depend on total bread an butter but can be used as peanuts in the monthly income.

shiraz Apr 21, 2017 04:28pm

We didn't forget your yellow taxi scheme fraud, it'sstill in our mind.

AG Swabi Apr 21, 2017 04:33pm

Punjab is constantly re-inventing and re-creating and we at KPK then copy some models, criticize other models or blame no-support from the Feds.

Keep moving, Punjab. You're definitely leading "the change".

Qudsia Apr 21, 2017 04:33pm

Mr Sharif could easily start his own uber-like service with the money... that would be a better option

Muhammed Ali UK Apr 21, 2017 04:34pm

Yellow cab then loans then lap tops now this...plenty of kickbacks coming..

Shahid Apr 21, 2017 04:44pm

Do they even know there is something called education? Spare some change for that too.

Riaz Ahmad Apr 21, 2017 04:47pm

Another scam for pre-election rigging and massive kick backs a repeat of distribution of free laptops. PLM-N at the centre and punjab is a governament of gimicks and kickbacks.

Shahzaib Apr 21, 2017 04:52pm

@FAISAL, then buy and run a taxi to participate in this 'visionary' step.

Shahzaib Apr 21, 2017 04:58pm

Here we go again. Punjab government will left no stone unturned in making the educated youth drivers and conductors.

NJ Apr 21, 2017 05:00pm

Visionary scheme to provide employment to 100 thousand men .Well done

ft Apr 21, 2017 05:00pm

No to your ludicrous schemes, Don't scam tax payers money, to get votes.

ft Apr 21, 2017 05:01pm

And now the ECP will remain deaf and blind.

Faisal Wahab Apr 21, 2017 05:04pm

@AG Swabi I am happy KP government is not leading on this one.

Hasan Apr 21, 2017 05:07pm

They only think about Punjab what about the other cities?

sabeeh ahmad Apr 21, 2017 05:10pm

Dont squander our tax money Mr Shebaz Sharif. We dont pay taxes just to squander our money to buy votes near elections... Enough is Enough. We will no pay a single penny more to you!!!!

Awan Apr 21, 2017 05:23pm

Yesterday my friend who works closely with Punjab government told me to buy shares of Suzuki and that to on urgent basis. Many top ministers of Punjab have already bought millions of shares of Suzuki. Now I can understand that why he told me to buy them quickly.

ivehadit Apr 21, 2017 05:25pm

here we go again!

Ali Asghar Apr 21, 2017 05:30pm

What complete and utter nonsense. This guy finds useless schemes to plunder more money and to buy some votes as he did in yellow cab scheme, sasti roti, Laptop scheme, apna rozgar scheme etc. Non of earlier cars are being used as Taxis.

Omar Apr 21, 2017 05:50pm

Does anyone remember his laptop scheme, sati roti scheme, yellow cab scheme etc. ALL needed up in disaster,

Najaf Apr 21, 2017 05:54pm

Taxi drivers ... is the fate of this nation!!!

Chandio Apr 21, 2017 06:02pm

How come shareef brother's are so obsessed with cab business as was nawaz in past people had thousands of Korean brand Hyundai cars under flood water , why he insisting youth to become drivers instead of doctors?

GIlgity in germany Apr 21, 2017 06:12pm

Good make the youth cab drivers not a doctor , scientist or Engineer. And people like these are running government.

salman Apr 21, 2017 06:24pm

@Faisal Whats so visionary about taking thier own scheme from the 90s and calling it orange instead of yellow? :)

Seems like PMLN have run out of ideas and are not recycling thier own failed schemes.

truth Apr 21, 2017 06:28pm

PML -N Schemes are to create taxi driver rather investing that money into schools

Bilal Apr 21, 2017 06:43pm

What else we can expect from a leader of third world nation.. producing new batches of drivers instead of scholors... shame

Jaj Apr 21, 2017 06:53pm

Have we forgotten how Sharifs plundered national wealth on Yellow Cab Scheme and made millions in commission? This is part two of the same mindset. They are providing 100000 cars to youth to run taxi business. And if so then question arises do we need 100000 taxis? Probably we will have to approach court to stop Sharifs from using money from government exchequer as bribe before elections.

Ravi Sankar Katragadda Apr 21, 2017 07:39pm

Lucrative deal. 100000 happy adults , can get at least 300000 votes. Car manufacturer will return the favour. Win win. But repayment to the banks .... That's banks head ache.

Ravi Sankar Katragadda Apr 21, 2017 07:55pm

Here in India we see similar tricks especially during pregnancy election season. I have not heard any politician or arm chair socialists telling the freebie demanding groups that one needs to put in 8 hours of sincere work for six days a week. They say there is lot of unemployment in India where as we struggle to find people willing to work for double the minimum wage rate. Lots of freebies for various sections from tax payers money, but no significant investment in health and education. We are all same in the sub-continent.

ARSHAD,Canada Apr 21, 2017 08:23pm

@anees khan ,bright graduates and Mscs can start a business from one car and grow. This could be a very valuable seed money.

ARSHAD,Canada Apr 21, 2017 08:28pm

@haroon ,why don't you or IK come up better plans? It is very easy to criticise someone or plan than come up your owns. This guy has many faults but he making Punjab better then the others. All you have to do is travel in the country.

Harmony-1© Apr 21, 2017 08:31pm

@Ravi Sankar Katragadda - I like your honesty!

We have common ills in our societies...and politicians :)

zafar ahmed Apr 21, 2017 08:33pm

Narrow vision of our leaders !

Khan Apr 21, 2017 09:25pm

Sharif expressed his desire to see the framework of the scheme developed electronically in order to restrict any possibility of mismanagement or corruption. You are correct sir, probably it may work this time.

Hamid Bilal Apr 21, 2017 09:34pm

How many more taxi drivers would you throw on roads now? Can we please place the young educated people in some department where they can actually earn money along with self-respect? Or this is all the game of upcoming elections 2018. Of people had to drive taxis and become cabbies I believe any person holding driving license can do so then why do we waste our money on education? "Parha Likha Taxi Driver Punjab Hamara"

M.Saeed Apr 21, 2017 11:16pm

Before starting the scheme, CM should get views of the Federal Ministry of Communication about the available space on urban roads. Already congestion on roads and frequent traffic jams, is taking heavy toll on vehicles and useless burning of fuel that also adds heavily to pollution.

Faheem Javed Apr 22, 2017 12:08am

thats putting the country under more debt! the fuel they ll be using for the cars they ll be indirectly have to import in more! they are determined to default the country

tahir malik Apr 22, 2017 12:51am

Beautiful ! 100K cars running round transporting the unemployed and hungry. Its not ignorance, but ignorance of ignorance that it death of wisdom.

Farooq Apr 22, 2017 07:11am

Why not improve the public transport system. Buses

Ahmed Apr 22, 2017 09:16am

Had they learned any lesson from past Yellow cab scheme, he would have restrained from such wastage of state resources. Earlier PMYBL scheme has eaten away billion of rupees of exchequer now they have announced one more way of corruption. Exports are going down, the per capita income is shrinking who is going to ride the cabs and pay for their silly vision and shitty genius.

JUSTICE Apr 22, 2017 09:44am

Wow, just like your past mega corruption achievements: like Sasti Roti, Yellow Cabs, and free laptops schemes, there is always an opportunity for PM-N to make extra money for themselves.

JKhan Apr 22, 2017 11:18am

This man is a visionary. He said it himself. Nobody shares this thought but I do. His vision is confined to discovering ways of money making scams. This is not a new one. Only the Orange part has been changed from yellow.

Parveez Apr 22, 2017 12:23pm

What happened ito the last scheme.
Small people with small minds. This is the Punjab government vision to make 100000 taxi drivers. Short term solutions.

affan Apr 22, 2017 12:35pm

Yellow Cabs in 1990's failed Black Taxis in 2010 failed Green Taxis in 2015 Failed Orange Taxi in 2017 ...?? wow what a visionary leader. Still there is no Proper taxi in capital of Punjab only Chingqi and rakhsha ruling

MSAlvi Apr 23, 2017 07:56am

The causes of unemployment are different. You have to improve the economy to create jobs.

Your idea of making every young man a taxi driver, is not a good one.

Fatima Apr 23, 2017 01:14pm

What's their obsession with cabs, train and transport in general. Like everything else is perfect on the country!
