Centurion Malik, Hafeez lead Pakistan to ODI series win against Windies

A sublime Shoaib Malik century and equally responsible knock from Mohammad Hafeez inspired Pakistan to a six-wicket win in the third and final one-day against the West Indies at the Providence Stadium, in Guyana, on Tuesday. Pakistan also clinched the series 2-1.
Chasing 234, Pakistan were reeling at 36-3 when Malik joined Hafeez in a decisive partnership of 113 in 128 balls to tilt the balance in favour of the tourists, who protected their 26-year unbeaten streak against the West Indies and also remained eighth in the ICC team rankings.
Man of the match Malik ended the game in style by completing a ninth ODI hundred by hoisting West Indies captain Jason Holder for a six. Malik’s 111-ball effort included 10 fours and two sixes.
Hafeez scored 81 off 86 balls with eight fours and two sixes after the in-form Babar Azam was among three casualties upfront, edging Shannon Gabriel on to the stumps for 16. Earlier Kamran Akmal scooped a catch to covers on the first ball of the chase and Ahmed Shehzad was brilliantly held low to his right by Shai Hope. It was then left to Malik and skipper Sarfraz Ahmed (24) to see Pakistan home with 41 balls left in an unbroken stand of 87.
Earlier, Shai Hope and Jason Mohammed lifted the home side to 233-9 after Holder won his third successive toss, but unlike the opening two fixtures opted to bat first after the start was momentarily delayed by a passing shower.
Hope and Mohammed, who both hit half-centuries, put on 101 after West Indies had slipped to 68-3 in the 19th over. Hope compiled 71 from 112 balls while striking one boundary and two sixes. Mohammed was more enterprising, making 59 off 64 deliveries with five fours and two sixes.
Imad Wasim was easily the pick of the bowlers with 1-24 in 10 overs, while Shadab Khan, Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan claimed two wickets each.

With this type of score and the way WI played, I doubt if WI would reach more than 250, and 250 is no score for most ODIs teams. But with players like Shahzad, Hafeez, Malik in Pakistan team, if two of them get stuck to the crease with their famous Tuk-Tuk game and decide to make painstaking century, than anything is possible. Anyhow, my prayers are with Pakistan, and I am hoping that Pakistani would win this game and series easily.

Sarfraz appears too anxious and shouting too many instruct. He needs to learn from Misbah. If he continues to show same temperament , he needs to be replaced.

@Ravian: Sarfraz is involved and captain have to be aggressive. Misbah never cared, was indifferent, and was riding luck and circumstances. That is the reason, Pakistan went down so low in ODI and T20I ranking under captaincy of Misbah. When world was adjusting their game for limited overs, Pakistan stuck with old test style. Even in test, Misbah record is not too good as some would like to believe. He lost 18 test matches. Though Pakistan won 24 test matches under Misbah, most of them were against weaker teams and mostly at home grounds (ground in UAE, where Pakistan made the pitches according to own desire and suitability, and always had home crowd cheering for them).
In the end, other teams jacked up their test style too, much closer to ODIs and T20I, but Pakistan (along with Zimbabwe, WI and probably SR) are playing old tuk-tuk style, cricket.

Misbah: won 45, lost 39. Win to lost ration: 1.15 ... Shahid Afridi: Won 19, lost 18. Win to loss ration: 1.05 ... Azhar Ali: Won 12. lost 16. Win to loss ration below 1 ... or 0.75.
Sarfraz has just taken over, though before taking over Captaincy he led Pakistan in one ODI match and won. Hence, if under Sarfraz Pakistan wins this match than it would be: Won 3, lost 1 ... Win to lose ratio: 3 (if Pak wins this game) ... but then, it is just start and one cannot judge Captaincy in 4 matches. Time would tell, if he would be more successful captain than others or not.

@Shazad , Sarfraz looks horrible shouting to his fielders and running to his bowlers after every ball. All of them are professionals (except Kamran's fielding) so instead of trying to bowl every ball yourself, trust others to do their job. I personally felt that Sarfraz seems out of his depth in tactics and according to former cricketers who are doing the commentary on TV, he looks nervous hence making all of his team nervous too. MSD is considered the ideal skipper in modern example of cricket and you could hear him passing info occasionally, not shout like others are little kids.

Well, it is true that too much interference is no good, but it is also true that when players think that Captain is watching and emotionally getting effected by their performance, than they do try to perform, putting extra effort. It is also Captain's duty to calm bowlers down down (especially when fielding) if any bowler gets battering, and fielders to get serious if they show slackness.
If Captain is emotionless, throwing smile (tum jo karo, may khush hoon) towards fielder who drops catch, misfield, do not even try to stop ball, make a wild throw, etc ... than obviously performance would get effected. When captain shows indifference on field, than players also become indifferent, as even though performance of the team is responsibility of all, but it is captain who goes through most questioning.

I am totally at a loss to understand as to why Kamran Akmal is in the team? First of all you have to hide him in the field when Pakistan is bowling. His batting average in odi's is 26.30 which is nothing much to shout about. He is over 35 years old.
More sensible thing for the selectors to do would have been to have sent a younger promising player in his place who could be an asset on field as well a lot of upside for the future. Fakhar Zaman should have played in his place in all 3 odi's.

@Nadir Aziz -When you have the chance of becoming a selector, you would know know why a player like Kamran Akmal was in the team? A team must be a blend of old and new players. If he got out without scoring, shouldn't be a big deal. In Cricket, you don't give up until your last wicket goes down.

That is why I was against the inclusion of Kamran Akmal and Ahmed Shazad in the team. They have been tried so many times. They are not worth the investment. You cannot rule out a conspiracy to sabotage Sarfaraz.

Hafeez would have been a better option then Ahmed Shazad for the test team. Hafeez's bowling would have been really handy on these pitches. Still time, please send Ahmed Shazad home and keep Hafeez for the test matches.

In first ODI, Hafeez made 88 in 92 balls and in this match Hafeez made 81 in 86 balls. But one should know and understand that this inning of Hafeez is much better than the last one, because in last inning when he made 88, he only made 29 in first 50 balls playing too slow. In this inning, he almost kept his pace at run a ball.
Now, since no one can tell when he could have got out, in last inning, if he had got out early than his inning would have made Pakistani target difficult to achieve, while in this inning, his pace was such that even if he had got out early, he would not have left any increased burden on batsmen to follow. Hence, his this inning 81 runs in 86 balls was much better than his last inning of 88 runs in 92 balls, because he kept scoring and scoring fast from first ball he faced (it was 4 runs).

Now this is how the batting chase should be done in modern ODI cricket by which Hafeez and Shoaib finally did. Shehzad and Akmal don't belong in this team. I hope Hafeez learned his lesson to score run a ball to get 300+ runs which is the norm. Told you @Waseem Sarkar that this is how Pakistan has to bat and accelerate the score. Pakistan were chasing like as there was 300+ on a slow pitch. Told you, you can bat fast just like other teams do even on slow pitch since batsmen play aggressively by scoring run a ball. Tuk-tuk batting is no longer suitable today and today Malik and Hafeez proved it. Hafeez needs to play like this and not tuk-tuk Misbah style which only hurts the team more.

@SARAH, we defeated west Indies who had services of Bravo, Russell, Pollard and everyone else in all three T20's and ODIs in UAE late last year while we easily defeated their T20 their T20 side which was almost full strength 3-1 last week. The only time west Indies have run Pakistan close is in this series. Perhaps Gayle, Bravo, Pollard and Narine aren't the best west Indies players anyway. Way overrated.

before showering with praises, do not forget they are playing with WI B team since their star players were kicked out of the game for misbehaving, Let's wait and see when we face better teams like Australia, New Zealand, and England in their own back yard. We will how sarfaraz shines in those conditions. He still be better Captain than we had so far but that will be the real test for every one including our young guns.

@Dawn why you wanted Hafeez and Shoaib to be out. Pakistan always win when middle order batsmen play well.
As a captain Sarfraz had to be very aggressive after demoralizing loss in first odi. Coming from behind and winning on foreign soil is never easy. Sarfraz intend is always to win that requires aggression to back up the team. That is why he is the captain. After winning first crucial odi series he should be relaxed and will have better understanding with players in coming series.

@Shazad I agree. Pakistani team must have a captain like Sarfraz Ahmed who is constantly involved and thinking a out cricket. Although the Pakistani players are all adults and professional players, they often perform unpredictably and poorly. For example, in the recently concluded ODI series with Australia, David Warner scored 179. Our dear players somehow managed to drop at least two catches during Warner's innings. Of course, if you fail to catch a high quality batsman like Warner repeatedly, he will like score a high century. This is exactly why Pakistani team needs a captain like Sarfraz.

Now since Pakistan won this series and being overjoyed, Kamran, Hafeez, and Shehzad will remain in the team for Champions Trophy and will likely lose. I don't except Hafeez to perform by luck against India because the top order players are pathetic and play slow and throw wickets away and put pressure on Babar Azam to perform every game to score a century. No Sharjeel and Khalid in the team will not challenge the top teams in Champions Trophy. Pakistan may get knocked out in the first two games. Sarfraz can't win for his team with worst players in the top order (Kamran & Shehzad).
