Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf's (PTI) chief whip Shireen Mazari on Tuesday criticised the government's decision to seal the Pak-Afghan border, saying it was not solution in the country's fight against terrorism.
"Terrorism will not be finished by closing the Pakistan-Afghanistan border," Mazari said during a session of the National Assembly.
Pakistan's border crossings with Afghanistan had been sealed in the aftermath of a suicide bombing at the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sindh ─ the deadliest in a series of recent attacks in the country.
The military leadership had claimed the attacks were carried out by militants operating from safe havens in Afghanistan.
Mazari asked why Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had alleged a day earlier that India is conducting terrorist activities in Pakistan when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had said during a recent visit to Turkey that Pakistan wants to do business with India.
"If terrorism can be defeated by closing the Pak-Afghan border, then why not close the Wagah border as well?" Mazari asked. "What is our foreign policy and who develops it?" she added.
Pointing to the Army's recently-launched Operation Raddul Fasaad, Mazari also questioned why the policies that had created "fasaad" (discord) in the country had not been done away with.
Adding to Mazari's criticism of Pakistan's foreign policy, PPP MNA Shahida Rehmani, pointing out that India was improving its relations with Arab countries, asked: "where do we stand?"
She added that Pakistan's relations with America also did not seem to be improving.
The MNA said that while the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was a "good" project, "relating it to all of the country's problems was not a clever appraoch"
In response, Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions Abdul Qadir Baloch said it is unfortunate that Pakistan's relations with Afghanistan have never been cordial.
Baloch claimed the present government had made efforts to improve the relationship, pointing out that Pakistan is currently hosting three million Afghan refugees.
Defending the government's decision to seal the Pak-Afghan border, the minister said there was an important reason for it.
"Evidence of Indian and Afghani agencies assisting terrorism is Pakistan is available," he claimed.
"The purpose of closing the border is to pressure the Afghan government to take action against terrorists."
He said peace in Pakistan is related to peace in Afghanistan and while "we are ready to provide Afghanistan with all the required assistance, how many bodies can we bury?"

Ms. Mazari knows very well that Wagah and Afghan borders are not comparable. Closing the border is not a foreign relation but immediate security issue which is done by the Government with the recommendations of all security agencies. Security apart, offering in all forums engagement, normal relations and business to India (and Afghanistan) is indeed foreign relations and nothing wrong with it .

Some borders like Wagah are opened so that people can attend religious proceedings like Khwaja Ajmer Garib Nawaz Shrine or Gurudwaras in Lahore. As far as business is concerned when there are common partners involved between both countries trade agreements are made. As firm of these top power holders are financed in millions or billions by these common investors in America and Europe.

PTI, PLMN and PPP are all elected parties and are in national assembly. Why don't you discuss such issues there instead of making "Tamaasha" of everything. 1. Border of Punjab between India and Pakistan is recognized by both countries which is not in case of Pakistan border with Afghanistan.
2. Wahga is not thoroughfare and it is closely gaurded by both Armies of India and Pakistan and all entries are through proper documentations which is not case in Afghan border
3. When Wagha border is closed no one even Lahore is that much concerned as it is more related to trade even India and Pakistan can close it at their own discretion and reasons
4. Decision to close Afghan border was by Army based on the operational considerations and intelligence information available not a political decision
5. People in KPK by far and large support the closure of border

Ms. Mazari is right the closing the border is not the solution. The solution is to send each and every Afghan back to their country. They have created enough troubles for us and Pakistan have gained nothing. Enough compassion shown in Muslim Brotherhood. All attacks are planned and co-ordinated in Afghanistan so its time for Pakistan to take action and clear the areas used against us just like US did after 9/11.

Confiscating all weapons in the country is not a realistic possibility. Stopping terrorism in Pakistan is a complex, not a simplistic issue. I think that while closing the border is not the ultimate answer , at least it's helping to reduce danger to Pakistanis from one source i.e. Afghan attacks. We must develop multiple strategies in the long-term to finish the curse of terrorism.

there are 2 sides to this coin which most of the readers are missing. Ms Mazari is asking right questions and challenging the decision...
1 side is that, pakistan over the years has supported, financed and trained the taliban in some capacity and does it even now but to select groups.
The other side is that the Kabul govt has very limited say or capacity to fight this menace as it has the support of Pakistan, and other nations as well...
Now the solution for us is to turn the tap off to all groups irrespective of their goal or affiliations or motives. Work with the neighbors to fight this evil with real tight relations (for this to happen, all other historical issues need to be handled and planned differently). this may seem difficult, but once you bring the neighboring foes to the table with sincere approach, it will move and give results within a short period....but who will bell the cat ?????

@THINK POSITIVE I am pakhtun but to me Pakistan is more important than Pakhtun on other side of the border. Same brother hood is in Kashmir also there but that border is closed and if someone want come to visit, they can come through proper channels. Pakhtuns from other side of border can visit through border entering points. It is like allowing the people to enter your house through windows not through main entrance of your house.

She is right. Pak should be looking at the cause of terrorism and uprooting it and not just who is carrying it out. The cause of terrorism is radicals, extremists and militants that are residing within Pak and the Mullahism culture prevalent within the country.
Mullahs are sympathetic to the militants cause and are busy providing fuel to the fire by consistently radicalizing Pakistanis with their extremist views and their madness to world dominance. What they cannot see is that in this pursuit of world dominance they are inflicting heavy casualties to the Muslims and damaging the very name of Islam.

She is absolutely right, closing the border was a knee jerk reaction from the government and security agencies. It only created problems for the common people on both sides of the border. Such measures can pressurize the Afghan government which unfortunately harbour our enemies but at the same time also strain our relations with the people of afghanistan. We cannot afford to make enemies all around in our neighbourhood. There should be effective border management not senseless border closures.

For once I agree with Shireen Mazari. Border cannot be sealed and Terrorism cannot be stopped. Learn to live with it by taking simple precautions like avoiding public gatherings etc.

I thought Ms. Mazari is very educated person. This statement or analysis sounds to me simply a criticism. You take actions with the help of intelligence you receive. Since Ms. Mazari you do not have access to that intelligence; it is better to let the army do its job. You are very well respected by the people and statements like this one is not necessary to say it loud, even if you feel strongly. This can only damage the cause and efforts. I hope you understand my point.

I could not resist to say: Ms. Mazari it is ok to not to say anything if you are not sure. It is not necessary that what ever government is doing is wrong and requires your evaluation or comments. PTI leaders in Pakistan always criticize the Government for no valid reason and its destructive. The aim is to show that the point of view of someone else has no validity at all, or lacks any merit.This kind of criticism
is undesirable nuisance, a threat and completely unjustifiable.On the other hand constructive/positive criticism is to show that something is better served by an alternative approach to improve our current policy.Now if you read Mazari's comments, there is no alternative approach given, Just criticism.The Pakistani government has given the names and the location of Ahrar group to Afghan officials which is sending suicide bombers to kill and maim our civilians.The Afghan government has done nothing to arrest these people and does not want to cooperate with us.The closure of the border is intended to send a clear message that Pakistan is serious about its security and expects the Afghans to take action.Does Mazari has a better solution or approach? Please enlighten us.

Ms. Mazari has made an absolutely valid point. If terrorism is being instigated by India, why not close the border with India? It is completely illogical to close the border with Afghanistan but not with India if we are claiming the terrorists are being instigated by India! Unless of course, the leaders know there is more to the causes of terrorism than just India or Afghanistan.

It is absolutely true that closing of border with any country is not a solution to the problems of terrorism either in India or in Pakistan. Had it been true USA and other European countries would not have been attacked by terrorists because there is no immediate border of these countries with the countries that clandestinely encourage terrorism. The only permanent solution is eradication of the basics of terrorism. @timetostopthis It is a puppet government controlled be northern alliance and does not represent Pakhtuns who are the majority in Afghanistan. It is the classic neo colonial setup where a minority is supported by foreign powers to create an inherently unstable government they can control.

@BIMAL CHANDRA JHA .You are missing the whole point. Pakistani Taliban moved to Afghan soil after the Army operation in FATA. Now they are sending suicide bombers to kill and maim civilians at public places. The terrorists were in contact with the command center in Afghanistan. The facilitator has been arrested and his information about the terrorist group has been given to Afghan officials abut they have not taken any action.Afghanistan is a land locked country and all the trade is routed through Pakistan including food. If Afghanistan does not want to cooperate to combat terrorism, we will close the border permanently. This is to give a warning and send a clear message.We still have millions of Afghan refugees living in Pakistan and we have ignored their overstay but they must realize Pakistan is not a one way street.

@Rehman. I am a Pakistani and I hate our people making unsubstantiated claims against other countries. Terrorists from Afghan soil are coming to Pakistan and killing our civilians.We do have a proof of that which has been conveyed to Afghan officials.In order to combat this threat we need Afghan govt's help to control these Jihadists or arrest them? Why Afghan govt is not taking any action against these factions? If they had taken any action, Pakistan will never close our border. Millions of Afghans have overstayed their welcome and we can't differentiate who is friend or foe among them.
