LAHORE: Police on Wednesday registered a case against 12 people for torturing a student of the Punjab University Law College.

The Muslim Town police registered a case under sections 147, 149, 342 and 506 of PPC against 11 unidentified men and one nominated suspect (Amir Hamza) on the complaint of Suhail Ahmed.

Ahmed said he was at his hostel room when 12 people including Amir Hamza stormed in and severely beat him. He quoted them as having said they were teaching him a lesson for tweeting in favour of a missing blogger.

PU provincial Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Zafar Mueen Nasir said the administration had taken notice of the incident.

A varsity official told Dawn that Amir Hamza remained a member of the Islami Jamiat Tulaba. “A former student of PU, Hamza remained involved in some other such incidents in the past,” he said.

IJT spokesman Taimur Khan said they had expelled Hamza from the group for various reasons last year. “We have no link with Hamza and the incident in question; the IJT is against violence on campus on any issue,” he said.
