A four-month-old baby has been diagnosed with poliomyelitis in the city of Chaman in Balochistan.

An official of the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC), which monitors polio cases, told media Tuesday that the results have been confirmed by the National Institute of Health (NIH).

The official further told media personnel that parents did not have their child routinely vaccinated as they "had misconceptions about repeated vaccinations".

The PEOC official elaborated that the child had only received two rounds of vaccines and no follow-ups were done.

The parents told PEOC that the four-month-old had developed high fever and weakness in his limbs in the last week of December.

He was first rushed to a local dispensary and later taken to a paediatrician in Quetta, where the diagnosis was confirmed based on NIH lab results.

Environmental samples taken in the last week of December 2016 from Chaman, Quetta and Pishin have continuously tested positive, reflecting a pandemic circulation of poliovirus in the area.
