KARACHI: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s remarks during a TV programme on Friday that former army chief Gen Raheel Sharif is poised to head a Saudi-led military alliance sparked a debate on Saturday with many criticising the general for the decision.

The minister had indirectly confirmed during a Geo News programme that Gen Raheel had been made the chief of the 39-nation coalition established to combat terrorism. There was no official confirmation or denial from the government, the Inter-Services Public Relations, Saudis or even from Gen Raheel’s side on Saturday.

With over 9,500 tweets, Raheel Sharif was trended on Twitter the whole day on Saturday. From a few politicians to retired officers of the armed forces, anchor persons, journalists, intellectuals — all questioned the decision of a former Pakistani army chief to join a foreign military alliance less than two months after his retirement.

However, most politicians having verified Twitter accounts refrained from commenting on the issue on the social media.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Asad Umar was among the few politicians who shared his thoughts on Twitter and termed the move unfortunate.

He tweeted: “Raheel Sharif accepting to become head of a military alliance which parliament of Pakistan had decided not to become part of is unfortunate.”

The Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen posted a statement on its website in which its secretary general, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, expressed concern over the move and said that it was against the interest of Pakistan. He said that the former army chief must refuse this appointment.

A spokesman for the outlawed Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat told Dawn that his party fully supported the move as it would be a great honour for the whole country if a former army chief headed an alliance of 39 Islamic countries against terrorism.

Retired Lt Gen Abdul Qayyum, who is a leader of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, said that leading the 39-nation military alliance would be an honour for the country. He, however, rejected the allegation that the military coalition was against any country or a sect. “Joining the Saudi-led military force is our religious obligation,” he told reporters at a function in Wah Cant.

In a tweet, anchor Asma Shirazi questioned: “What if a general accepts the offer of becoming a chief of an alliance against Saudis #RaheelSharif”.

However, there were some people who believed that the defence minister deliberately spoke about a move that has yet to be finalised.

Columnist Dr Muhammad Taqi tweeted: “One gets a sense that Khawaja Asif Sb may’ve spoken too soon; trying to throw Raheel Salahuddin Sharif Ayyubi under the public opinion bus?”

On the contrary, an overwhelming number of tweets from common users hailed the decision and praised the general for his “successful” efforts in combating terrorism in the country.

Cricketer Ahmed Shahzad tweeted that he was proud that Pakistan was working to combat terrorism under the leadership of Gen Raheel.

Hundreds of people congratulated Gen Raheel on the social media. “A solider is always a solider doesn’t matter whether he’s on duty or not “Raheel Sharif”,” reads a tweet.

He should have accepted an additional two year to continue his services as COAS. Integrity of Pakistan come first and is far more important.

Zahid Malik Jan 08, 2017 08:38am

This is a wrong move by both Pakistan and Raheel sharif and time will prove it.

Saif Zulfiqar Jan 08, 2017 08:37am

What is wrong with this appointment. He won't get salary from Pak government and has not been appointed by Pakistan. He will represent Pakistan and organisation need a leader and he will lead this organisation.

Jay Shah Jan 08, 2017 08:38am

He has proven himself. He can now lead at the global level and help eradicate the cancer.

Ali Asghar Jan 08, 2017 08:41am

Wrong Decision.

Faisal bajwa Jan 08, 2017 08:42am

If the alliance shapes out as NATO like, it'd be good for our national defence and put a foot on Indian ambitions in check. Imagine a contribution of a brigade and a squadron and some logistics from each country would shun any thoughts of adventurism from our rivals.

Javed Jan 08, 2017 08:53am

Proud to be a Pakistani as our beloved commander holds the position to protect Muslim Ummah' s security challenges.

Zohaib Jan 08, 2017 08:58am

@Zahid Malik InshaaAllah time will prove you wrong and Gen. Raheel right.

javed Jan 08, 2017 09:02am

Raheel Sharif, son of a good family and a great nation, will prove his metal in his new role. InshaAllah.

Raaz Jan 08, 2017 09:23am

Bad precedent

Azizuddin Jan 08, 2017 09:26am

The ex COAS has served the nation with utmost integrity and brought much deserving dignity to the institution and the country. Thoese making contraversy only represents the sick mentality and have no shame whatso ever! Such obstructionist cannot see even a honest person progress or let him decide how he would like to use his post retirement life. I Salute the COAS and would trust his judgements! Congratulation on your new assignment Gen Raheel Shariff. The nation collectively stand behind you Sir!

saifur Jan 08, 2017 09:30am

It is absolutely wrong decision. Before joining Saudi let military alliance Mr. Raheel Sharif should consider the purpose of establishing and even the use of this army alliance. How many Muslim countries appreciate this military alliance?

MIR Jan 08, 2017 09:37am

what a waste...he should have served his own country in any capacity

Khawja Aziz Jan 08, 2017 09:34am

Those making controversy only represents the sick mentality and with no shame what so ever! Such obstructionist are libility to the country whe cannot even see such a honest person of impecable integrity decide on how he would like to use his post retirement life. Congratulation! Sir! I am a proud Pakistani and fully support General Raheel's decision to take charge as chief of Ummah'military alliance. Having said that, I will not support any of alliance moves against Iran or its allies, who I hope will also join the alliance in near future.

Saawan Jan 08, 2017 09:37am

No "sparking of Debates" only few odd opinion. Which is good for the countrty. But your selection of words to label it as "sparking of debate" can be understood!!!

M. Sadiq Jan 08, 2017 09:42am

@saifur "How many Muslim countries appreciate this military alliance?" Answer 39 of 56 so far.

Sab Se Pehle Pakistan Jan 08, 2017 09:42am

Great man General Raheel Shareef. Deserves great achievements. The nation is proud of you Sir.

sanjeev Jan 08, 2017 09:45am

Any employment by foreign countries offered to the people who have served at sensitive posts should be first approved by the government. This is a security issue. On this post if he has to take any decision detrimental to his own country, but in the interests of his new employers how he will resolve the conflict of interest ?

Hussain684 Jan 08, 2017 09:42am

In the first place, why lead a controversial force with so many ifs and buts

asif Jan 08, 2017 09:53am

I heard that he was suppose to work for the betterment of families effected by the wave of terror related activities?

adnan Jan 08, 2017 09:54am

VERY GOOD DECISION, hope and pray it will bring peace in all Muslims and non-Muslims countries.

Citizen of karachi Jan 08, 2017 09:59am

Good decision as long as it is intended to combating terrorism only.

sid Jan 08, 2017 10:12am

Its a bad move unless Iran also joins. Pakistan must not get involved in the proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

ADNAN MAZHER khan Jan 08, 2017 10:15am

Raheel Sharif has chosen a wrong path for himself. Where is the 39 countries military alliance and have been committed our forces for this alliance. His credibility is at stake. I hope he reverts back as soon as possible and live an ordinary life.

Syed Ahmed Jan 08, 2017 10:17am

I believe wrong signals to western countries he should stay away from these kind of cheap positions

SDA Jan 08, 2017 10:21am

We should all be proud of Pakistan and Gen. Raheel Sharif to be chosen to lead the multi nation efforts to combat terrorism.

brr Jan 08, 2017 10:19am

Time to take it in.

Amjad Jan 08, 2017 10:32am

Wait..... isnt this the same Khawaja Asif who threatened Israel over a fake news story.

Joseph Jan 08, 2017 10:34am

Good decision. And it's personal decision of Gen (rtd) Raheel Sharif. Ofcourse he has a leverage to use his goods offices for peace talks, we must look forward optimistically for peace, and brush aside escalation of war from our minds.

shakir hussain Jan 08, 2017 10:41am

Good solider bad decision

Sarfaraz Jan 08, 2017 10:42am

Every individual in this country seems to safeguard his interest and benefit. No one is willing to mend the repugnant system. Gen Raheel did the same thing as he left the whole nation among the most corrupt politicians to deal with. We Pakistani find nowhere to go and find no ways to get over this system.

ejaz Jan 08, 2017 10:56am

Is there a legal way to stop him?

Khawar Saleem Aslam Jan 08, 2017 11:04am

I think it is a very good move considering the integrity and professionalism of General Raheel Sharif and need for Muslims to jointly tackle terrorism. I cannot understand the implied criticism of Saudi Arabia; what is wrong if they lead Muslims joint effort. Has anyone else offered to lead?

shahid Jan 08, 2017 11:08am

Very bad decision. General Raheel has lost much of earned prestige and respect.

Hassan Hemani Jan 08, 2017 11:13am

The first thing he should do, in my opinion is that he should make efforts to include Iran and Iraq in the alliance. This will make the case much better especially for Pakistan.

Malik Jan Jan 08, 2017 11:14am

Ex-General Raheel Sharif has to see what's the decision of the parliament on Saudi and Iran relations in Middle East.

faisal Jan 08, 2017 11:24am

One of the worst decision ever made by any former COAS, Pakistan will face the consequences.

mohsin Jan 08, 2017 11:28am

Bad move.

rationalist Jan 08, 2017 11:30am

Wrong decision very similar what Pakistan had done previously to support US against Soviets.

Pakcritic Jan 08, 2017 11:31am

Raheel should use his position of leadership to bridge the gap between Iran and Saudi. Find a common ground that creates a bridge of cooperation between Saudi and Iran.

He should help Saudi and Iran reach a common understanding on Syria, Yemen and Israel. He should also use his position to help bring about prace in Libya.

Fayzee Jan 08, 2017 11:59am

Excellent decision. An honor for Pakistan. Muslim Ummah needed such an alliance. And for Raheel Sharif to head such an alliance is a credit to his credentials and experience in fighting terrorism.

fahd Jan 08, 2017 12:01pm

I heard everyone praising him in personal.conversatuons and WhatsApp . 10000 tweets don't matter. Well done general good decision. It's a proud moment for Pakistan. Don't listen to those who don't even know where their own lives are headed.

yaser Jan 08, 2017 12:05pm

Wrong decision

M.Asim Jan 08, 2017 12:04pm

Good decision to head the Military alliance.. Praises for Gen. Raheel

Dr. Farooq khan Jan 08, 2017 12:16pm

He is retired and whatever he does after retirement is his personal choice. Give him a break. Try not to be judgemental.

elli Jan 08, 2017 12:23pm

Congratulations sir!! The nation collectively behind you

RAO aMJAD ALI Jan 08, 2017 12:30pm

Formed in 1932, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia remains a hereditary dynasty, one of the most primitive in contemporary history. It is not a signatory to the UN Charter of Human Rights nor does it provide any space for debate or discussion on the benefits of democratizing the state. In fact there is zero tolerance for anyone trying to engage in voicing alternative political views.

Clearly, the General must set out first and foremost to defend the Kingdom before cleansing the terror outfits. And while doing so ask the question: when was the last time that the Ummah stood up against state sponsored terror that Israel has been unleashing against the Palestinians? Will it do so under his able command?

muhammad Zafar Iqbal Jan 08, 2017 12:38pm

its definitely a proud moment for Pakistan and entire nation as they have been entrusted to lead the Islamic forces against terrorism and anarchy which otherwise if not combated in time may damage the Islamic countries specially the most holiest places of Islam , so there is no use to make hue and cry on the Gen Raheel's joining the allied forces and that too as chief Commander.

TBH Jan 08, 2017 12:41pm

@Dr. Farooq khan if it is a personal decision then why defense minister making announcement.

Zahid HAroon Jan 08, 2017 12:46pm

Perfect decision to head the 39 countries military alliance. Some people against this must know situation in Syria is created by is Israel to make its greater Israel agenda. So if we preemptively will not take step soon or later all Muslim countries will be same like Syria. So its positive step that Saudis has created 39 Muslim country military alliance and Pakistani chief is heading that.

shawn Jan 08, 2017 12:56pm

joining that coalition is much bigger than pakistan

Rashid Nasim Jan 08, 2017 01:00pm

Great decision RS. I will keep you in my prayers.

Akram Sheikh Jan 08, 2017 01:01pm

Raheel Sharif has retired and what he chooses to do now is purely his personal business. No one has the right to intrude in his decisions and ideals or to push their own beliefs, opinions and standards on him.

Pak Patriot in Dxb Jan 08, 2017 01:05pm

What a useless debate!! As if he needs public approval for this appointment?!? When will be learn to mind our own business? Let the man do whatever he wants

Mahmood Jan 08, 2017 01:06pm

We should hold any judgement until all the finer details of this alliance and the role Pakistan is supposed to play in it, emerge. Until than, it is all opinions and speculations. Opinions are like a Nose. Everyone has one.

Junaid Jan 08, 2017 01:16pm

Don't make it a Sunni-shia issue and criticise on asis of that....

He's a credible person......far more credible than all those criticisers...

zain khan Jan 08, 2017 01:13pm

It's is his personnel decision and not come under the jurisdiction of parliament

I m Pakistan Jan 08, 2017 01:17pm

After the parliament has clearly decided not to even join the alliance, look what the general has done. He was eager to become field marshall even at that time but restrained by parliament. Now look, this speaks how much generals care about Pakistans laws and parliament. Indeed its very unfortunate.

hasnain Jan 08, 2017 01:24pm

Amazed and confuse to see who can oppose such an honorable act. A person who is proven accomplished against this menace, the decision is in biggest interest of the world. But Pakistan's interest are different?.... Are we not in same league anymore? I hope the results will prove, the world will appreciate, that this is a right decision. We are with you Sir.

Kams 724 Jan 08, 2017 01:32pm

Unfortunate and controversial move

M. Jan Jan 08, 2017 01:36pm

General Raheel Sharif must not compromise his integrity and dignity by getting involved in the dirty politics of the region.

KB Jan 08, 2017 01:42pm

People started the most easiest thing... criticising with no orientation of subject.

A Khan Jan 08, 2017 01:40pm

General Sharif shall not damage his earned reputation in Pakistan.

Mubashir Jan 08, 2017 01:43pm

There is clearly a conflict of interest right here: no retired General should accept any position outside country for at least two years after retirement!

ishRat salim Jan 08, 2017 02:04pm

After all the effort & hard work that he did as COAS, Sitar e Imtiaz was awarded to Gen Bajwa on 25 Dec,2016, who is yet to show his own performance, was this fair ? So, the decision of Gen Raheeel was correct...

Tariq Rashid Jan 08, 2017 02:24pm

I don't see any reason for such uncalled criticism it would be honor if he is offered and appointed as Head of Grand Military Alliance...

shah khan Jan 08, 2017 02:38pm

terrible decision ....

agha Jan 08, 2017 02:40pm

@Zohaib agreed

waleed Jan 08, 2017 02:45pm

Its his career, and he is the one to decide what the best move is for him. He has served country with dignity and honour and has retired from his position. we should not compel someone to influence the career move just for the sake of saying so

Fact Check Jan 08, 2017 02:47pm

This answered the general's retirement as army chief on time. No doubt this was not in a pipeline already even during his tenure. I don't feel proud for his decision since its not Pakistani Army that he has joined again. Country first then the rest, as if everything is alright in Pakistan.

Sen Jan 08, 2017 02:59pm

What exactly is the objective of this coalition. Without clear objectives he is bound to find getting results difficult

changez khan Jan 08, 2017 02:56pm

Ex-COAS Raheel Sharif is a retired General, what he does and where he works after his retirement is nobody's business so people who have problem with his new assignment need to shut up.

Jamal Jan 08, 2017 03:01pm

What's wrong with his career move, seriously? If his ex-institution and the laws of land doesn't stop him from accepting a new job as soon as he retires from the current one, why the world is worrying?

umer Jan 08, 2017 03:10pm

Well I think we should wait for General Raheel's response.

SA Jan 08, 2017 03:25pm

@KB Actually it is vise versa, any wise man who know the history of region, allegiances and previous and current wars can easily understand the objectives. Please read the history.

zafar ahmed Jan 08, 2017 03:35pm

I agree with PTI leader Asad Umar's comment "Raheel Sharif accepting to become head of a military alliance which parliament of Pakistan had decided not to become part of is unfortunate.”

Sach Jan 08, 2017 03:40pm

One cant turst khawaja asif

M. Asghar Jan 08, 2017 03:48pm

The appointment of the General to this post of the alliance, if confirmed, may have serious and negative geopolitical consequences for the country, and these have to be avoided due to the present tension of the region.

Fardad Ali Shah Jan 08, 2017 03:59pm

Gen Raheel proved his metal and his sincerity by defeating terrorism and actualising the CPEC. I'm sure he will play a positive role in this new capacity too. We only pray terrorism leaves us forever and CPEC gets strengthened over time.

Santosh Jan 08, 2017 04:19pm

Raheel Sharif is a good military leader and he can lead anti-terrorist operation.

DJ Jan 08, 2017 04:19pm

I am the one strong admirer of Gen Raheel Shareef but personlly don't like this move. Apparently it looks like he did not accept the extension just because of this role.

J. Niaz Jan 08, 2017 04:22pm

This step is fine and an honour for the country.

Mansoor Ali Khan Jan 08, 2017 04:33pm

From Hero to Zero with this move..

Muhmand Jan 08, 2017 04:44pm

I support Raheel sharif. Good decision keep it up

khanm Jan 08, 2017 04:48pm

Interested remark some one made... a soldier will always be a soldier ... I guess ...There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter....

Zulfiqar Jan 08, 2017 04:50pm

Congratulations to Raheel Shareef on becoming head of Islamic military Alliance of 39 Nations. This Alliance will be very powerfull and can defend all the Muslims in the world. He is the best choice to lead the Alliance.

Haider Jan 08, 2017 04:52pm

Good decission by Gen Raheel Sharif and Pakistan Army.

IMran Jan 08, 2017 04:59pm

Very disappointing and controversial move.

Rajesh Jan 08, 2017 05:11pm

@Hassan That is what common , normal people think.....The "high and mighty" think differently ( i.e.) only about themselves...

Sarah Jan 08, 2017 05:18pm

It is great honour for the country and the world. A man of integrity and famous for making brave decision is appointed to defend 38 alliance of islamic countries against terrorism threat the ummah is facing at present he will be great deterrence For lot of countries who are responsible for terrorism breed. bad decision & disappointed

Kamal Jan 08, 2017 06:02pm

@Zahid Malik - anybody is free to take up any responsibility in his/her own position anywhere just like any professional working outside Pak. This is not Govt move.

Each and every Pakistani should support that man. He is a leader and so far all his moved has fruitful for Pakistan and this one will also prove, best in the interest of this country. Why we are taking everything negatively. I believe it has nothing to do with sectarianism and so far it has proved. Long Live Muslim Ummah, Long live Pakistan

Wrong decision by raheel sharif and Pakistan

PAKISTANI Jan 08, 2017 06:42pm

Proud of Raheel sharif

hindu Jan 08, 2017 07:18pm

@Khawja Aziz

Honest person of impeccable integrity. Yeah, right.

observation Jan 08, 2017 07:38pm

Many Middle East countries launched a struggle to get themselves out of the influence of Turkey because they wanted independence. Now their benefactors are playing another game in the area. Should Pakistan jump in this scenario to stabilize these countries? I think Pakistan is already offering its services in many ways. There is no need to find an excuse to send an able (ex) General out of the country so that business can continue as more than usual within Pakistan.

ZAK Jan 08, 2017 08:04pm

Ex-COAS is looking for an international role that was denied when he was in service. He will represent Pakistan in the Alliance and bring credit to Pakistan

DIL DIL PAKISTAN Jan 08, 2017 08:10pm

Baseless critisim

Mk Jan 08, 2017 08:07pm

Raheel Sharif is a free man after retirement. He will be serving Muslim alliance which is not a foreign term for us. Whatever the overt or covert objectives of this alliance are or will be, I fully support a Muslim military alliance which needs to discipline itself.

Youth Jan 08, 2017 08:12pm

I am for the Muslim military might.. I hope Rahel Sharif gives this alliance some direction.

DIL DIL PAKISTAN Jan 08, 2017 08:12pm

Bravo Ex COAS becomes head of Military alliance.

zak Jan 08, 2017 08:16pm

He is heading the force against terrorism not any nation. An excellent move and that too to help the Saudi brothers. So stop criticizing and start supporting. Imagine his input to all the military establishment of the 39 nations on Kashmir issue. wow!

bkt Jan 08, 2017 08:21pm

This is the first time a retired COAS or C-in-C of Pakistan has accepted a position after retirement.

Agha Ata Jan 08, 2017 08:32pm

Oh, people give General Raheel a break. He is retired and has the right to do anything. There could be numerous reasons to do that. The foremost could be fighting the terrorism, at which General Raheel is known to be better than any other. To oppose such a thing is petty politics, not an appropriate attitude which is the main reason why many problems of the world are not solved. Because we do not approve of some ways for our personal whims or ulterior motives. The main thing is that terrorism is being fought. How, why, lead by whom, with or without permission of our PM carries no weight. Pakistan seems to be another version of Donald Trump with his upside- down list of priorities.

hindu Jan 08, 2017 08:40pm

In addition to everything else, the timing is the most suspect. Sounds almost like he already had this thing in the bag, and was just waiting for his retirement for an opportunity to grab it.

No wonder he wasn't seeking an extension!

Riz Jan 08, 2017 09:16pm

he happy with his decision good for him. Good for everyone

MohammaD latif Jan 08, 2017 09:24pm

It is A great move : he is retired from Pakistan army and leading an alliance force and filing space would be created by us is great move : lots of our people don't understand international situation and what us doing in the world : this is a great honor for Pakistan : we should also build air craft carrier and other strong naval assets help Arab countries and provide them nuclear umbrella

Mukhtar Jan 08, 2017 09:36pm

Bold decision by the bold commander We do support you Go ahead and lead the whole Muslim Umma Long live Pakistan Long live Raheel

Muzaffar Ali Jan 08, 2017 09:34pm

All Sasudi energy is directed against Iran. Does the General understand that?

Amit Gaikwad Jan 08, 2017 09:59pm

@TBH spot on... Well said

AXH Jan 08, 2017 10:05pm

Raheel Sharif should not have accepted this role. These middle eastern countries are the reason behind spread of jihadist terrorism around the world and knowing it quite well, Raheel Sharif still decided to head this force.

Hasan ali Jan 08, 2017 10:13pm

This is to crush terrorist movements in rudderless Muslim countries. A coordinated effort will be the goal to destroy the terrorists . There should be no debate.

Abid Jan 08, 2017 10:56pm

I understand RS will be the first chief of the org. Excellent move. He can shape it in our image. Good for PK, long-run.

Ajamal Jan 08, 2017 11:11pm

Right step by General Raheel Sharif. Instead of corruption and accepting gifts, as done by Musharaf, he has accepted an overseas assignment.

Zulfeqar Canada. Jan 08, 2017 11:41pm

@Junaid So the coalition against whom?

Ali Jan 09, 2017 12:05am

General Raheel Sharif has won the respect and admiration of the world, for his courageous and exemplary leadership to confront terrorism, which is a worldwide threat. He served as the Army Chief for three years with great distinction, above and beyond the call of duty.

He has now been appointment as the Chief for 39 Muslim nations alliance to confront terrorism. This is good news as terrorism has devastated Muslim countries, more than others. There is no one else more qualified. This should not be made a political issue. Terrorism is evil, the war on terrorism must be won.

Hasan Jan 09, 2017 12:16am

@saifur 39 muslim countries have joined the coalition,

Khwarezmi Jan 09, 2017 12:33am

Gen Raheel is a an eagle and people are jealous of his flight :)

Muhamamd Jan 09, 2017 12:36am

Why people are asking him that what is he doing after retirement?

It's his life and his decisions. He is not part of the system any more and he every right to choose what's best for him and his family.

He has served in Military and has done enormous Job of reducing terrorism. let's be real, what have we contributed in betterment of Pakistan till now?

Stop judging people and their acts when you can't correct yours.

nasr Jan 09, 2017 12:48am

It will be only a good decision if Raheel Sharif can bring the divided Muslim Ummah under one umbrella

Ahmad Zubair Jan 09, 2017 01:13am

The nation get elevated when somebody serves the cause of Ummah. Raheel Sharif has been entrusted to save the Muslim Ummah from evil forces. Being Pakistani Muslim ,It is an Honor.

Goga Nalaik Jan 09, 2017 02:13am

@Khawja Aziz His integrity will be proven if he insists to include Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Libya... otherwise we all know what is going to happen. Saudis are going to divide us further and muslims are going to destroy muslims...

Ahmed Hanif Jan 09, 2017 02:10am

@Tariq Rashid People who have served at sensitive posts should be first approved by the government. This is a security issue. On this post if he has to take any decision detrimental to his own country, but in the interests of his new employers how he will resolve the conflict of interest ?

Saleem Sial Jan 09, 2017 02:29am

It is a moment of pride for Pakistan and Raheel Sharif family. I am sure he will fix the extremism in the Muslim world to large extent, like he did in Pakistan.

Shakil USA Jan 09, 2017 03:32am

Iraq, Syria and Iran are not part of alliance and Why not? Respectfully COAS we need to look first Pakistan.

sn Jan 09, 2017 03:36am

yester days HERO, now what, why people have changed their mind, its politics only no bearing on HERO

Hassan Parvez Jan 09, 2017 04:27am

Deeply sadden by this news. A great hero who got unprecedented love from the entire population of the country let him self get involved in the proxy war between Saudi rulers and Iran.

nizamuddin Ahmad Aali Jan 09, 2017 04:45am

Like most of the countries elected officials, cabinet ministers and all generals are forbidden to work for foreign govt. Working for an entity ( Saudi alliance against Yamen )which was widely rejected by Pakistani masses is unthinkable. We will kiss good by to our neutral position.

nizamuddin Ahmad Aali Jan 09, 2017 04:48am

Is Raheel Sharif is trying to push us towards conflict in ME.

saber Jan 09, 2017 05:40am

Another hero got wasted.

PR MAN Jan 09, 2017 06:45am

@Dr. Farooq khan : If it indeed is a personal decision then what the Defense Minister of Pakistan has to do with it? Why did Raheel Sharif consult the government? If so, why not the parliament? Is it possible that NS, on behalf of the Saudi government, paved the way for RS to land this job? I don't know but undue secrecy always breeds cynicism.

LAHORI KID Jan 09, 2017 06:51am

This is indeed an honor for the General to lead a coalition of 39 nations against terrorism, my thought is, will he make all the decisions or someone will dictate who they go after? Terrorism is a menace that is destroying the world, it must me eliminated. Period.

Mazher Bashir Jan 09, 2017 06:51am

Great decision from a great man.

Gul Jan 09, 2017 07:00am

@javed The policies he started in Pakistan didn't materialize now what makes you think his current move will bring success. He may head the alliance but the fighters under his command are worthless. On the contrary it might bring shame to Pakistan.

Kashif Jan 09, 2017 08:14am

I hope this would remain a rumor, Raheel Sharif doesn't seem like a person who could make such immature and disastrous decisions.

Hashim Jan 09, 2017 08:56am

I dont really understand what the fuss is about. It should be considered an honor that General Sharif has been chosen for the task of leading this multi-national force. This is the first time that such an initiative has been taken in the Muslim world, and the General's selection as the head of the alliance is a testament and recognition of his leadership and astuteness in the face of adversity.

In the entire Muslim World, there are not really any personalities that stand out today as acknowledged leaders. I hope General Raheel Sharif not only works towards eradicating the menace of terrorism from Muslim countries, but also helps in bringing together Muslim countries and resolving the misunderstandings among them, something that only a towering personality like the General can achieve.

shaz Jan 09, 2017 09:12am

Good luck to GRS. Nobody knows it is good or bad move. Time would Judge him on his performances and professionalism. No doubt , he has proven his worth in Pakistan. He has leadership qualities---eg. Lead from front, commitment, passion and man of words and very down to earth. We should all wish him good luck and to current GQB as well.

DIL DIL PAKISTAN Jan 09, 2017 09:12am

Good decision

Fayyaz Jan 09, 2017 09:28am

worthy comment on the part of Asad Umer

Ali Jan 09, 2017 09:59am

Raheel Shareef sb is a visionary person. If he has taken the decision to join so he must have some working and confidence let him do this also. As far as our politicians are concerned so please he is far faithful to the country then them.

Imam Hussian Jan 09, 2017 10:05am

This move will solve pending issues, unite people and will bring hope for common people. It's not an anti Iran alliance, this move will bring someone acceptable to all. Overnight emergence of terrorism in established countries be eradicated. people should respect others running the country for decades with harmony, religious freaks be terminated. Raheel will bring bridge between SA and Iran, time to make bridges than to keep on fighting for centuries.

Torus makto Jan 09, 2017 10:08am

if he accepted extension he would've been criticized, if he retired and got a job in dha or government again criticism, if he did nothing would've been criticized for doing nothing, now he has sought a higher and better position for himself he is being criticized, that's the Pakistani nation

My 2 cents Jan 09, 2017 10:19am

A jouney from hero to zero!

Ali Jan 09, 2017 10:48am

@Torus makto rightly said

malik humayoun Jan 09, 2017 11:05am

Excellent Decision by our Great Leader Raheel Sharif he has ability to control the current worse situation of the Muslim countries. its honor for Pakistan to Lead the collation Army
Pakistan Zindaabad Raheel Sharif Zindabad

aslam shaikh1 Jan 09, 2017 11:07am

I hope he can transform the force to also become a peacekeeping force and help Muslim countries like Syria.

Sajid hassan Jan 09, 2017 12:25pm

We are facing the terrorism and Alliance will make us strong against terrorism. we need to join like this alliance. This is our requirement. Please support the alliance, who will lead no problem

Shahzad Hyder Jan 09, 2017 12:40pm

An ordinary decision for ordinary reasons by an ordinary man, who until recently was cheered by many as extraordinary. The great lines written by Cyril, Salute to Dawn for being so brave, Hats off....

ashfaq Jan 09, 2017 01:10pm

Very few people get the most influential slots in any country and once they are holders of that positions, they are deemed to be a symbol of dignity for that nation.RS did laurels for Pakistani nation off course, , and when there arose question of joining that alliance of 39 countries , our NA unanimously passed resolution against joining such an alliance. I find no logic, if the evil or bad while a ago becomes good and fruitful now...?

khakan Jan 09, 2017 01:29pm

This is wonderful news. It is an honor for Pakistan to lead the coalition of Muslim forces. It is also a recognition of the quality of Military leadership that Pakistan Army produces. Best Wishes

khakan Jan 09, 2017 01:26pm

@Hassan There is integrity in accepting extensions. It is a terrible precedence set by General Kyani .

All armed forces chiefs must retire on time.

khakan Jan 09, 2017 01:33pm

@Zahid Malik why do you say that. Raheel Sharif is a former COAS. He is a private citizen and he can decide what he wants to do. People of Pakistan or politicians have no right to make a big deal out of it. That includes Asad Umar of PTI.

khakan Jan 09, 2017 01:35pm

@Ali Asghar You have a right to your opinion just like Raheel has the right to decide what he feels is right for him

Ali Jan 09, 2017 03:35pm

Very disappointed ....... Military and civil leadership, they all are concerned about their own well being ......

Seema Jan 09, 2017 04:36pm

Great decision, it's a proud moment & big honor for Pakistan indeed. Lots of prayers for him.

Sajid Jan 09, 2017 05:42pm

@Javed It's not Muslim Ummah. It's just security for Saudi dynasty. They are too weak to defend themselves.

Javed Jan 09, 2017 07:08pm

@Sajid Gen Raheel Sharif is a wise man. He would not have accepted that offer if it was just for Saudi Arabia.

Dawn Jan 09, 2017 07:19pm

".... all questioned the decision of a former Pakistani army chief to join a foreign military alliance less than two months after his retirement." I agree.

ZIDAN Jan 09, 2017 10:29pm

It is a good decision and everyone know that who's feeling heat by the decision of Sir Raheel Sharif.

Zubair Ahmed Soomro Jan 10, 2017 12:06am

good decision by general raheel sharif those who criticise upon should shame on because he is one who can resolve conflicts between different muslim countrys i think so through this command he can resolve conflicts of muslim countrys etc..

kdspirited Jan 10, 2017 02:38am

Its the wrong decision because he will be forced to pick sides based on who Saudis deem terrorists. Their adopted definition against other muslim countries will not be good for Pakistan in the long run. We need to stay neutral. And in order to stay neutral we should not be part of any coalition that half of the muslim world is not part off

sullu Jan 10, 2017 03:11am

if some one thing we are making Iran angry by this move, do Iranians not thank when they cooperate with Indian in Afghanistan and other fields against Pakistani intrests??? do they do not think that they are doing something against a brotherly country??? brotherhood should be two ways street, not one way.

atta mateen Jan 10, 2017 03:43am

He is not setting the right precedence by leading an Alliance that was formed against our neighbor and another Islamic country Iran. Besides, this is an ethic issue.

brr Jan 10, 2017 07:29am

There are always consequences to all actions, wise or stupid ones. This one will be negative - nothing good comes from joining

Rashid Jan 10, 2017 09:08am

This is conflict of interest as well as security breach, our Govt should not allow a Pakistani ex general to work for some other country.

M Rafique Jan 10, 2017 11:33am

this debate will remains within cup of tea

Noor ul hadi Jan 10, 2017 03:12pm

very good Decision we fully support him

Talha Khan Jan 10, 2017 04:51pm

The world is in a fragile state, especially referring to the chain of muslim states. One hopes for harmony and prosperity. Political ignorance has led to many conflicts, ultimately leading to a military action. Let us all hope that RS will promote peace and political stability amongst muslim nations, and of course try to build positive image of Pakistan at the forefront.

zahid Jan 10, 2017 05:04pm

clear the situation

Dr. rafiq khan Jan 10, 2017 10:16pm

Only 9 countries have agreed to play a military role in the alliance:

Bahrain, Bangladesh, Libya, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, UAE

Jason Jan 10, 2017 11:00pm

@Faisal bajwa understandable sentiment. Not very practical. Our neighbors are very well embedded with many you feel will support Pakistan. This is their achievement and no one can deny it.

rashid nasim Jan 11, 2017 01:30am

When news comes from Khawaja Asif, I get suspicious, he always have motive behind any talk. I would only believe when Raheel Sharif will make this announcement. I guarantee you Khawaja will change his statement soon. Just think about it that out of 39 nation member, only Khawaja know what is happening and no other country or an individual knows about this.

Mesotwisty Jan 11, 2017 01:45am

He retired! So up to him what he wants to do after retirement. Good for him.

Naeem Jan 11, 2017 02:57am

Wrong move by Raheel. Why does he want to ruin his reputation

Arif Jan 11, 2017 10:27am

People with sick and negative mind thought wrong.

People who belive in bright future of country support him.

Syed Ahmed Jan 11, 2017 01:18pm

He spill the bean when he demands including Iran, first place Saudis monarch could not sallow this demand first place they invitation to him invade Iran some ways some how not to include iran on this bunch

Anwar Mahmood Jan 11, 2017 02:40pm

It is good to discuss important matter like this, otherwise one drops from hero to zero.

From USA, S.A.Hyder, Ph.D. Jan 11, 2017 07:55pm

@Akram Sheikh: Military officers, just like Government Officers, DO NOT have a right to choose what ever they want to do for a foreign government, even after their retirement, without prior permission from the government. That is the law of the land. It is called NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE.
