Iam quite sure most of you would have some type of music as your favourite, such as jazz, rock, pop or even country music. But at your age, many will be more inclined towards pop.

If you want to know more about musical genres from around the world, there is a place with information about hundreds of genres and sub-genres in the world of music right in one place! This is Everynoise — a site with more than thousands of musical genres.

The site is the work of Glenn McDonald from the Echo Nest (musical data company). You can start exploring the world of musical genre right from the homepage where the first thing to be noticed is the randomly arranged names of the genres in a ‘Map’ view. But scroll down to the bottom where the site explains its genres as: “Down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier.”

So how does it work you may ask? Well, just click on any title/name and listen to the 30 second song or music clip played through Spotify; you can know more about the artist and track information if you hover your cursor over the genre and click the appearing arrows which will take you to a new page where detail of the genre and the artists appear.

The site has the map view as its default but if you don’t want, you can choose the ‘List view’ (from the menu bar) which arranges the genres in a list very neatly with various filters for further exploration. The good thing in ‘List view’ is that you can listen to the same tracks in full length through Spotify’s player and not 30-second clips. If you have a specific genre in mind, choose ‘Scan’ from the menu bar where you can jump from one clip to the next.

The site’s Twitter page claims to be gaining more genres so visitors are advised to explore the homepage every now and then. To find the strangest or the loveliest musical genres from around the world, explore: http://everynoise.com/
