Taxes on property

The recent tremendous increase in taxes on sale/purchase of property by the FBR is like killing the goose that lays the golden egg. The target of collecting an additional Rs 70 billion nationwide through this measure seems to have backfired. Property transactions are at a standstill since July 1 and not even last financial year’s average tax revenue is being generated.

It is unheard of in any democratic country that taxes are raised suddenly and to such steep levels. Taxes are raised nominally and that too after a fierce debate in parliament.

The public does not want its rulers to finance their princely lifestyles at the taxpayers’ expense.

If accountability of public servants and legislators particularly those in government, was foolproof, Pakistanis would not mind paying high taxes.
