KARACHI: Sindh Rangers on Monday night initiated action against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), for allegedly inciting violence in the metropolis.

The paramilitary forces raided party headquarters Nine Zero, took senior party leaders into custody and sealed MQM offices there.

Rangers’ Brigadier Khurram, while briefing media about the operation in the wee hours of Tuesday, confirmed that MQM’s office, Khursheed Memorial Hall and party's media department has been sealed.

He said the paramilitary force also recovered weapons from Nine Zero, which will be sent for forensic tests.

The Rangers officer further said that the operation on MQM headquarters was carried out in accordance with law.

What we know so far

  • Dr Farooq Sattar, Khawaja Izhar, Dr Amir Liaquat taken into custody by Rangers
  • Rangers raid MQM headquarters
  • Nine Zero, MQM chief's residence and party's media cell sealed
  • MQM website blocked soon after late-night raid
  • PM Nawaz Sharif calls high-level meeting on Tuesday to discuss Karachi's situation

The action followed after violent protesters attacked an ARY News office in the Saddar area of the metropolis, which resulted in clashes between police and the angry mob — killing one person and injuring several others.

Police and sections of the media alleged that MQM workers had carried out the attack after receiving directives in a speech by MQM Chief Altaf Hussain.

In custody

MQM leaders Dr Farooq Sattar and Khawaja Izharul Hasan were among the first to be taken into custody while they were trying to address the media outside Karachi Press Club.

The two leaders had gathered to address the media in connection to the attack on ARY News, however, as they were about to start the press conference, Rangers officials arrived at the site and asked both the leaders to come to Rangers headquarters.

Sattar attempted to resist being taken into custody but was eventually convinced to follow orders. Khawaja Izhar also accompanied him to the Rangers headquarters. DawnNews reported that Rangers officials informed the MQM leaders that DG Rangers Major General Bilal Akbar wanted to see them.

The raid on MQM headquarters Nine Zero in the Azizabad neighbourhood began shortly after.

According to initial reports, nine MQM members were taken into custody from Nine Zero, including senior party leaders.

The paramilitary forces also arrested MQM leader Dr Amir Liaquat from his office on I.I. Chundrigar Road.

The party offices that were sealed include Nine Zero, the MQM chief’s residence and various sector and unit offices in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Malir and Gulistan-i-Jauhar areas. MQM's media cell was also sealed.

MQM’s official website could no longer be accessed following the raid.

The zonal headquarter of MQM in Hyderabad at Bhai Khan ki Chari and a number of sector and unit offices were also padlocked by police.

Heavy contingent of police arrived at the zonal office and padlocked the main secretariat and linked offices. Moreover, sector offices in Latifabad and other parts of the city were also sealed; however, no arrests were made.

'Situation under control'

Justifying action against the MQM, DawnNews quoted DG Rangers as saying, "We don’t want the common citizens of Karachi to suffer any harm or losses...a certain segment is inciting the security forces to violence but we will not fall into their trap."

Major General Bilal Akbar assured that future arrests in connection to the attack on ARY News would only be made based on identification of protesters by Farooq Sattar.

Sindh Rangers also urged the citizens to help them identify the "miscreants" who allegedly raised anti-Pakistan slogans during the protest outside Press Club.

Regarding the earlier attack on ARY News, Director General Sindh Rangers Major General Bilal Akbar issued a statement reassuring citizens that they would be protected. “The attackers will be made to pay for their wrong deeds,” he said, adding that no one would be allowed to carry out violent protests.

Over in London, a number of British citizens registered complaints with the Metropolitan Police Department demanding action be taken against MQM Chief Altaf Hussain for incitement of violence, Geo News reported.

MQM leaders express patriotism following Rangers raid

Soon after the paramilitary force initiated the operation against MQM in Karachi, leaders of the party took to micro-blogging website Twitter to re-affirm their love for the country and apparently disassociate themselves from the anti-Pakistan slogans allegedly chanted by Altaf Hussain.

The already suspended MQM leader, Irum Azeem Farooqui, was the first to record dissent against the party. She condemned the people who chanted anti-Pakistan slogans and also announced her resignation from the party.

MQM’s senior leader Abdul Rashid Godil also expressed his love for the country.

Senator Tahir Mashhadi, Faisal Sabzwari, Babar Khan Ghauri and Saman Jafari were also among the MQM leaders who expressed their love for the country through Twitter following Rangers' action against their party.

Farooq Sattar is a great leader, great negotiator, he knows how to talk, how to handle issues on priority. A patriot party member and good listener.

Sajid Aug 22, 2016 10:23pm

Totally biased and unjustified action by rangers. Farooq Sattar has nothing to do with what happened today's evening. The way they were pushing him and harassing him is shocking.

About time the MQM realises that militancy is no longer a valid tactic. They must stick to the strength of vote, and realise that Altaf's foul mouthed vitriol is only landing them into trouble.

Arslan Aug 22, 2016 10:36pm

Wrong move! Police should have take action

M.Saeed Aug 22, 2016 10:36pm

For how long the MQM excesses would be covered under the political activity? Every single citizen shall have to give account of his misdeeds.

There is no need to worry about Farooq Sattar

Mehak Gulab Aug 22, 2016 11:04pm

Wrong move by Rangers, it should be Sindh Police who should be arresting Political Party leaders. This is will lead to chaos in Karachi in coming days and things will get worse. MQM is a major political party in Karachi which not only won recent elections but also garnered people support.

javed Aug 22, 2016 11:07pm

Darkest day in short history of Pakistan. I feel ashamed to be a sympathiser and voter of MQM/ AH. What bad name and shame he has brought to the community and Karachi. Long Live Pakistan! Jeway Pakistan!

@Sajid Farooq Sattar is MQM's chief in Karachi. He was present when Altaf uttered anti-Pakistan comments but he Farooq Sattar remained silent. Where had Farooq Sattar's patriotism gone at that time?

Azhar Jamil Aug 22, 2016 11:23pm

It's not a great work. A very sensitive issue and must be handled carefully. Any irresponsible statement should not be highlighted please. Our political class and law enforcement agencies need to compromise.

Haider Aug 22, 2016 11:25pm

I wonder if such an efficiency will ever be demonstrated to get the leaders responsible for Model Town massacre in Lahore.

Muhammed Aug 22, 2016 11:27pm

Enough is enough. All of them must be taken into custody. The organizers & everyone involved in getting the speech relayed. They must all be tried under the Anti-Terrorism act.

Wajahat Ali Aug 22, 2016 11:39pm

Those who are raising slogans against Pakistan and creating the hatred must be dealt with iron hands and action against them should be taken above the board.............

Law and order must be restored in Pakistan for us to prosper. Our law enforcement institutions must be strengthened without political associations. Then and only then, the country will start heading in the right direction.

Judicairy must not be intimitated by any party or person. Justice must be quick and not denied to the poor.

Then, we can call it SAFE AND PROGRESSIVE PAKISTAN......

Iqbal Hadi Zaidi Aug 23, 2016 12:54am

Without prejudice to anyone whosoever I say at the top of my voice that all those who are directly or indirectly involved in rioting in Karachi today must not be spared come what may. I have seen that Dr Sattar and others are arrested by Rangers hence they must be punished if found involved and not otherwise. Let truth prevail with no reference to any push and pull, enmity or favor. Pakistani nation must know who are those who killed or got killed one person in Karachi which is highly condemn able. But please do not arrest anyone just on hearsay, I wish and advise. If MQM is the most powerful political force in Karachi then it should not construe to take law in its hands and if it does so then its leaders must be behind the bars but again Innocent should not be dragged in at any cost. Those arrested must be routed through lies detector and those found telling lies must be awarded additional punishment. Nation is watching and waiting to hear nothing but truth. Iqbal Hadi Zaidi

TZaman Aug 23, 2016 02:25am

Using every other small issue as Sedition against country will cost heavily to the country itself (remember late 60s). Using military power, and defence forces statements in every issues will reduce the aura and outlook of the military. Let the small issues be tackled by Police ... And military can monitor the police from far.

Army's respect and aura must be maintained at all cost.

Muba Aug 23, 2016 02:25am

@Sajid in these situations its not about what he did..he represents a party that has endless list of crimes..look at the big picture..none of this help the country until bigger steps are taken..yes even bigger than this..

Ahsan Gul Aug 23, 2016 02:33am

Anyone if he is connected to a party or group of people creating disturbance and making comments against Pakistan then their leaders be arrested also because if leaders not keeping their followers in line then leaders have to be punished.

@CHEEKO BEEKO o man safe sound

sam1 Aug 23, 2016 04:11am

Politician's should not be allowed to spread violence to make a point. MQM should condemn violence on ARY reporters and offices to clarify their position instead of continuing to work both ways. The violence can destroy peace in the city and Sind province. MQM leadership should thank Rangers for putting them in safety from possible counter attacks in city by their rivals

sam1 Aug 23, 2016 04:15am

@Sajid He should be thankful that he is in safe hands. After what happened at ARY offices, there would have been more violence if he was allowed to run his speech. Resisting or fighting back physically police orders is a criminal act and he is lucky that they did not force him to ground and put handcuffs.

Anjum Ali Aug 23, 2016 04:33am

@Haider Spot on

Sarfraz Aug 23, 2016 11:31am

Well done Rangers. MQM should have been banned years ago. Do it now, forever!

kanwarch Aug 23, 2016 11:31am

@naji Who cares how good he is supposed to be but if he does not dissociate himself from Altaf Hussein and the rubbish he spoke yesterday then he is an accomplice until proven otherwise.

Zak Aug 23, 2016 11:44am

good job. I thought we have democracy and they are elected by the People !!!

asad Aug 23, 2016 12:05pm

MQM should rethink the policy of becoming Mutahida.

Killerbee Aug 23, 2016 12:39pm

Great job rangers Pakistan is moving towards success.

Lafanga Aug 23, 2016 01:03pm

@Sajid They have taken him in for questioning and asked him politely to go but he refused so he was "convinced" to accompany them. If he was being arrested he would be in handcuffs.

Nothing shocking.

My 2 cents Aug 23, 2016 01:55pm

About time????

Inzamam Aug 23, 2016 02:25pm

great job from the Army and Rangers too

khanm Aug 23, 2016 04:15pm

very interested comments, at time i wonder!!! So many repeated actions against MQM and each time the Party emerge much stronger than before, do we know why???? cos no main political party /stream... consider the sons of the soils as the indigenous not the one who migrated as real Pakistanis.. unless we win the hearts of Millions of Mohajirs the status quo will never change.... we need to change the gang mentality we need to change our attitude..let us learn from our mistake in creating Bangla desh...cos we never gave them the due acceptance they deserved. besides the commercial interests of all political parties and agencies should be seriously addressed...

Ahsan Gul Aug 23, 2016 06:16pm

@khanm - sad to write that people like you do not understand the meanings to love a country and still going back 60 years to create divisions among people. Generations have passed since Pakistan came to existence and you are stuck with old references

Majid Ali Aug 23, 2016 06:23pm

How rangers pushing Farooq Sattar who represent millions of peoples....why this happens to only Karachi leadership why this does nto happens to politicians who rob the country? Why PPP have free hand who are doing corruption of millions everyday... no one arrest them neither no one touch them... why rangers does not go to Punjab? Why Raheel does not do anything with these corrupt leaders?

JAVED RAHMAN Aug 23, 2016 06:29pm

@khanm Accurate analysis of the situation.

khanm Aug 23, 2016 06:30pm

@Ahsan Gul ... It is your past that makes your future...Pal..History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.

Dr. Ashraf Kh Aug 25, 2016 01:12pm

No matter, whatever differences we could have with M.Q.M and it's London based leadership, but pushing democratically elected representative of people is not by a uniform men is not accepted. We have democracy, let’s handle issues democratically and in a civilized manner.

The first rule of justice is to apply it against everyone. When the Rangers will take action against Panama leaks culprits and those who order firing on PAT workers in Model Town, Lahore?
