Gen Raheel asks US to bomb TTP hideouts inside Afghanistan

RAWALPINDI: Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, in a meeting with senior US officials at GHQ on Friday, raised the demand of targeting Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants and their chief Mullah Fazlullah in their hideouts in Afghanistan.

Talking to Commander Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan General John Nicholson and US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson, Gen Raheel said "Pakistan will not allow Indian and Afghan intelligence agencies to foment terrorism in the country".

According to an ISPR communique, the regional security situation with particular reference to border management and peace and stability in Afghanistan in the post-May 21 US drone strike environment came under discussion during the meeting.

The army chief reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment towards the war against terrorism and effective border management with Afghanistan in order to promote regional peace and stability.

Expressing his serious concern on the May 21 US drone strike in Balochistan ─ which had killed Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Mansour ─ and terming it a violation of Pakistan's sovereignty, Gen Raheel highlighted how the drone strike negatively affected the mutual trust and respect between the two countries and the gains made during Pakistan's own war on terror.

He told the visiting dignitaries that it is unfortunate that Pakistan is blamed for instability in Afghanistan, adding that Pakistan has always expressed its readiness to work for a long term peace process for Afghanistan under the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) framework.

Now, why would US do that. I needs to please its newly found love for India and India is involved in financing terrorists in Pakistan, which the US is well aware of but has decided to look the other way because of its business dealings with India. Pakistan will need to defend itself and not rely on a "hope" that someone else will do the right thing.

Well said General Raheel. I have been writing on these pages since, that we should ask the US command to drone and eliminate our biggest headache that is TTP's head Mullah Fazalullah hiding in Afghanistan because, Afghan Government is unable to do so for us.

Good diplomacy. Basically telling US to do their part to stop terrorism coming from Afghanistan to Pakistan. There are no Haqqani etc training camps in Pakistan whereas Afghanistan is hosting TTP/BLA and all sorts of terrorist outfits with their training camps run by NDS and RAW.

Pakistan is needlessly tangled up in Afghan problem. Pakistan needs to isolate itself from never-ending, now three decade old afghan problems, because it is making Pakistan a backward country. Let others fix afghan problems. Pakistan needs to concentrate on its own progress for economy, industrial development to create jobs, education to produce skilled labour force and professionals. Continued involvement in afghan problems will eventually make Pakistan a banana republic and that would make enemies very very happy.

Gen Sharif is absolutely right there. US forces are in Afghanistan for over a decade now I would be surprise if they don't know where TTP hideouts are. Afghanistan is the base of terrorism if you won't catch terrorist there then no point of sending drone to Pakistan. Let the Pak force deal with them as they are very much capable of teaching lessons to terrorist and their enemies.

Yes USA is here to stay in Afghanistan like the way they are in Korea and Japan. US department of defense is the biggest landlord in the world. Unlike other imperial powers in the past, USA derives its strength from US dollar, which is the most accepted legal tender in the world and USA can borrow in its own currency from the world market. China cannot, Japan cannot and Russia cannot. All 6 trillion dollar which US government owes to foreigners can be printed in three months and paid back. May be this action will provide necessary inflation urgently needed in the western countries as deflation is a problem there. Afgan Taliban and Pakisatn cannot throw out USA in the same manner what Iran and Vietnam Did. As far soviet union withdrawal from Afghanistan is concerned it was a negotiated withdrawal. Taliban were able to topple Nazibullah only after Yeltsin stopped supporting him.

Gen Raheel has spoken in all fairness, hope the Americans take note. Pakistan has paid a huge cost for their war and mistakes in the region. Meanwhile, Modi who lectures about peace and prosperity (hollow words), has training camps in Afghanistan from where terrorists attack Pakistan. This is very unfair on Pakistan. About time it was stopped. Pakistan must address this issue in all international forums.

Drone strike eliminated one such terrorist. Is that a concern? Countries should stop incubating such terror groups. Where was osama bin laden found? Where is maulana masood azhar hiding? Is'nt it pathetic that a terrorist who is released in exchange for passengers lives in air india flight hijack is allowed to stay freely. Instead of raising concerns, we should appreciate such efforts where terrorists are eliminated.

Good job General. It is time for all foreign forces to stop making Pakistan their intelligence and counter intelligence playground. Pakistan is still paying heavy price for getting involved in 1979 assist to drive out Russians. Saudi financially supported and the USA by providing intelligence. What did Pakistan achieved? Some politicians and some high military personnel filled their bank accounts with the foreign aid and the rest of Pakistan public got terrorism, poverty and inflation by supporting Zia's government. Raheel Sharif is the man who has the courage to speak the mind of the common man in Pakistan to the visiting US officials. Elements of TTP terror from within Afghanistan acting against Pakistan must end. Pakistan wants peace in Afghanistan & the region. Afghan government and US forces must not allow RAW and Afghan intelligence to support acts of terror inside Pakistan. These hostile infiltration and acts of aggression from within Afghanistan's soil against Pakistan must stop. Pakistan must seal its western borders with Afghanistan with only few controlled and monitored entry points. All personnel entering Pakistan must have proper visa and other required documents along with verification of their identity. Any unauthorized and illegal entry into Pakistan's western borders must have an effective military response. Drones must also be countered as any terrorist infiltration.

Well said by COAS. America needs to "do more" to prove that it's serious about fighting terrorists . Pakistan is playing it's part .Now let us see US do something practical to stop terrorism.

@Chicago You have endorsed my recommendation. He should rise to the occasion and lets get him promoted to the rank he deserves. Time for him to be in-charge of all that matters for safely, security and sovereignty of Pakistan. If the nation loses this opportunity it will an opportunity lost for decades to find a good and balanced leader of his caliber. Generals material to be promoted to Field Marshal is General Raheel Sharif. Tomorrow will be better for Pakistan with him being in the saddle to manage future challenges that are yet to come to be faced by Pakistan. India's nefarious design's can be countered by him more efficiently single handedly than by any other General. Rise to the occasion General Raheel Sharif, Pakistan is with you!

@Abdul Karim I second your comments. Fully agreed. That's the immediate need of Pakistan to address this cross border terrorism being exported by India through Afghanistan. These recommended measures will reduce a great deal of present ongoing terrorism coming to Pakistan through Pakistan's western borders. Seal the Pakistani western border at all points and manage only two legal border entry points that being one in KPK and other being in Baluchistan. Rest all points of crossing must be heavily guarded with effective measures as Iran does it on it's Iran-Pakistan-Iran-Iraq borders etc.
