RIYADH: Armed forces from around 20 countries including Pakistan and Malaysia are gathering in northern Saudi Arabia Sunday for "the largest, most important military manoeuvres" ever staged in the region, the official news agency SPA reported.
The "Thunder of the North" exercise involving ground, air, and naval forces sends a "clear message" that Riyadh and its allies "stand united in confronting all challenges and preserving peace and stability in the region", SPA said.
Saudi Arabia is currently leading a military campaign against Houthi rebels in its southern neighbour Yemen.

Last December, it also formed a new 35-member coalition to fight "terrorism" in Islamic countries. Sunday's announcement also comes as the kingdom, a member of the US-led coalition targeting the Islamic State group, said it has deployed war planes to a Turkish air base in order to “intensify” its operations against IS in Syria.
SPA did not specify when the military exercise will begin or how long it will last.
However, the agency called it the “most important and largest in the region's history” in terms of the number of nations taking part and the weaponry being used.
Twenty countries will be taking take part, SPA said. Among them are Saudi Arabia's five partners in the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as Chad, Egypt, Jordan, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Senegal and Tunisia, it added.

A Saudi source said on Thursday that members of the new "anti-terrorism" coalition will gather in Saudi Arabia next month for its first publicly announced meeting.
Riyadh has said the alliance would share intelligence, combat violent ideology and deploy troops if necessary.

Their deployment of troops on Turkish border is not to fight against Daesh, but they are for Kurds and Syrian Arab Army' who are fighting against Al-Qaeda affiliates and Daesh. We are proud of Muslim Uma's unity provided it is not against any Muslim state. All other members of the bloc need Pakistani assistance whenever they are in hot water. A collective non aggressive thinking needs to be developed among the member states in order to evolve a broader alliance beneficial to the rest of the world. I think that Pakistan should participate in such exercises, it helps Pakistan Army to understand the geography of Arab countries. This is only a Training and not a fight. So don't take it serious. Turkey is fighting against Syria's Assad and Kurds. KSA is targeting Assad and Iran. Neither is taking on Daesh. Interestingly, languages of the Kurds and the Baloch are related. Both peoples have progressive outlook.

It really surprises me when some ignorant give argument that since many Pakistanis are working in KSA sending huge remittances, Pakistan is obliged to help KSA in wars, even if KSA is aggressor (Yemen), propping arms rebellion in other countries (Syria, even Pakistan), helping regimes to suppress own people (Bahrain), and so on.
If that is the case than using same criteria, these ignorants would want Pakistan to help USA in their war of aggression, interference with other countries internal matters, helping regimes suppress own people, and so on. Because many Pakistanis not only work in USA but gets better treatment than KSA, and these Pakistanis send billions in remittance to Pakistan. Plus, USA is the biggest aid donor to Pakistan (unlike KSA, who rarely donates anything), provide higher education and training to Pakistanis, support many schools and hospitals in Pakistan, and is biggest supplier of military and industrial hard wares to Pakistan. Right?

There are much more Pakistani working in KSA then USA. 2.USA allows citizen ship and KSA does not. People settle in USA build and buy property there, save for retirement etc. KSA does not let you settle down, every penny you earn will be sent to Pakistan. KSA has helped us in every single natural disaster, they helped us when we were under sanctions. Stop spreading misinformation because of your ignorance or worse bias.

What you sow today shall reap tomorrow is the adage wise people always takes into account. As a citzeens we must appreciate the decision taken by the policy makers regarding being part of this alliance. It would be far better if the issue at hand has been thoroughly debated in the parliament as a sign of being a democratic country. However, it is for sure that our esteemed military commanders may very well know the depth of such initiatives and that brings us to say that there is no need of being worried by indulging ourselves in unnecessary speculations. One more thing which i want share on this occasion is the expression of my profoundest desire that it would have been far more better for the leaders of Islamic countries if they concentrate their energies to expand their investment on the prospects of education,how to alleviate poverty and providance of excellent health facilities to their subjects rather than indulging in profitless pursuits such as this.

Wrong decision of Pakistan's pro-Saudi government. Pakistan should not be part of any alliance created on sectarian basis. PML leadership should not take historical wrong decisions based on personal relationships.

God is my witness how much I love Pakistan. It pains my heart how inspite of our strengths we have been marginalized to play second fiddle to Saudi Arabia. I remember leaders like Air Marshal Nur Khan who gave us so much pride and honor and dignity in everything they touched. They were true patriots who had the best interests of Pakistan always in their mind. They took bullets in their chests to protect the honor of Pakistan.

Pakistan should not send any forces to join the Saudis, we should be helping Saudi's and Irani's to reconciliate rather than taking sides!! No one is attacking Saudi , infact it is the saudis who are attacking Yemen amd sending forces to Turkey. My comment's are at mercy of the moderator.

I am surprised by the fact that insurgency victimized states, Iraq and Iran are not incorporated in the Saudi led coalition. The states in which this coalition has to fight (Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Syria) should be the integral part of the coalition. But here is not the case, Iraq and Iran are not a part of the flawed polarized coalition against insurgency. This coalition is not more than a polarization of the Islamic world, or more drastically one can say Sunni, Shia polarization. Islamic states should not promote factionalism, Rather they should unanimously strive to alleviate the Factionalism in the Islamic world.

Twenty Muslim countries have formed a military coalition against terrorism. This is great news, something which should have been done much earlier. Its not against any religion or country, its only against terrorists who have killed Muslims and devastated Muslim countries. Pakistan as the only Muslim nuclear-weapon state, has great responsibility to lead the fight against terrorism, as the people of Pakistan stand for peace in the region and the world. Unfortunately, religious fanatics hijacked Islam, which is a religion of peace and brotherhood of mankind.
