KARACHI: Eminent journalist Naushaba Burney died here on Thursday morning after a prolonged illness. She was 83.

She leaves a son and two daughters to mourn her death.

Ms Burney was born in the Indian town of Nagpur. After the partition of the subcontinent, her family migrated to Pakistan. She did her master’s in journalism from the University of Berkeley, California, in the 1950s. She was the first active woman journalist of Pakistan. She taught journalism at the University of Karachi.

Ms Burney joined Dawn’s supplement section in the early 1990s and subsequently became editor of the newspaper’s Sunday Magazine. After leaving Dawn she joined the Aga Khan University Hospital’s PR department. She used to write prolifically on social issues and did interviews of many distinguished individuals from different walks of life.

Her husband, I.H. Burney, was also a journalist of renown. He was the founder and editor of Outlook magazine. He was also instrumental in founding the Karachi Press Club.

Ms Burney was the elder sister of Ameena Saiyid, managing director of Oxford University Press.

The funeral procession will leave 43/7-H, Block 6, PECHS near Ferozabad police station at 12.30pm on Sunday.
