KARACHI: At least 11 members of a fisherman's family were killed when a fire broke out at an island near coastline of Thatta, Dawn News reported.

Several huts were gutted in the fire which started sometime late Saturday night in Ibrahim Jat Goth of Shahbundar area off Sindh coast.

A local police official Mohammad Javed said initial reports suggest that an oil lamp fell due to high winds and sparked flames that engulfed the family's wooden hut.

Javed said the victims included five men, three women and two children. The blaze engulfed the poor family's home, made of wooden planks and covered by bushes.

The two injured children were transferred to the Civil Hospital in Karachi for treatment.

The village is located 35 kilometres off Keti Bandar port in Thatta District and it takes an hour to get there, therefore the rescue personnel faced difficulties in carrying out rescue activities.
