ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif will be embarking on a visit to Saudi Arabia and Iran from Monday January 18 to defuse tension between the two countries that spiralled after the execution of Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia.
Official sources confirmed that the top civilian and military leaders would pay a day-long visit to Saudia Arabia on 18th January to meet Saudi King Salman and will discuss with him the latest situation in the Middle East and the kingdom's relations with Iran.
The sources added that after the trip to Saudi Arabia, the next stopover will be in Tehran where meetings will be held with the top Iranian leadership aimed at defusing tension with its arch rival KSA.
Saudi Arabia and fellow-Sunni Bahrain cut ties with Iran, a few days days after Iranian demonstrators stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran in protest at Riyadh's execution of prominent cleric Sheikh Nimr.
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and some other states broke off ties with Iran over the attack. The United Arab Emirates downgraded relations while some others recalled their envoys in protest.
The Iranian government quickly distanced itself from the attack, saying the protesters had entered the Saudi embassy despite widespread efforts by the police to stop them.

Last week, Saudi Defence Minister Mohammad bin Salman visited Islamabad to discuss Saudi Arabia's military alliance against the self-styled Islamic State, and met with Army chief General Raheel Sharif who assured him of a “strong response” to threats to the kingdom’s territorial integrity without committing troops to the alliance.

This is first remarkable news I have heard in decades. Pakistan has a lot of potential and resources to play the role of a peace maker and mediator. We cannot take sides in regional conflicts, that will serve no purpose to anyone. World is in the grip of terrorism and we cannot afford new wars to start in our neighborhood. Good initiative from Pakistan. But I suspect the sincerity of the Saudis.
When the sanctions are lifted against Iran next week, the Iranian oil flow will put further pressure on crude prices., which are already below $29 a barrel and many predict it could hit as low as $10 a barrel. That is definitely hurt the Saudis and other gulf states...Hence their motivation to create tensions.

Its not about Iran invading KSA or an arab country. Iran can play a spoiler by funding proxy wars as it is doing in Yemen (Saudi Arabia's backyard) or in Syria.
So you have to look at both sides of the situation. I think both of these countries (KSA and Iran) have legitimate grievances against each other but Pakistan must push and use its good offices to mend the divide.
This conflict is the single biggest and most damaging threat to the Muslims of the region. They must be inspired by Pakistan to make peace no matter what it takes. Otherwise we will see more bloodshed in the Muslim world, but this time along ugly sectarian lines, which must be avoided at all cost.

Your apprehension is not so ill founded as it must be really very difficult for Iran to bring about any fruitful peace negotiations with Saudi Arabia-a country that has openly attacked its longtime friend and ally Yemen and is busy bombarding her unarmed civil population for the last more than one year and at the same time Saudi Arabia has been busy dislodging the government of Syria through its proxy war conducted by ISIL. But lets have faith in the great initiative taken by Pakistan to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia and I'm very hopeful Sharif & Sharif shall meet success in their well intended efforts for peace in the region.

Shareef plus Shareef. They are going to Saudi Arabia and Iran to play their due role in lessening the tension between the two Muslim brother countries. Pakistan is friendly to both Saudia and Iran and therefore it is quite but natural that Pakistan must play its due role at this point of time. PM in particular and Army Chief in general must be praised for the efforts they are to put in to defuse war like situation. However, it is very much expected from the pair that both of them shall be very judicious in their approach with no tilting either to right or to left when engaged in talks with Saudia and Iran so that their neutrality is not be challenged to any extent otherwise the very purpose of reconciliation is defeated. I conclude saying that ever since luckily our both dignitaries are officially named as ‘Shareef’ so the question that at some point of view they may turn as ‘Shareer’ simply does not arise at all come what may. Polarize at your own peril!
Saudi/Iran sectarian conflict could potentially divide families, communities, and the nations. Both countries are on their bad behavior and they have been waging proxy sectarian wars for decades in our backyards. Use of their religious faith as a brand serves them well in advancing their national political, economic, and business interests.
Faith is about believing in something as truth without a proof. When it comes to faith, the evidence has no place in an argument. Why to fight on matters of our unsubstantiated individual assumptions and perceptions? Yet Pakistanis will be forced into sectarian conflicts by agents of discord.
All merchants of religion will prey on people's emotions. Pakistan could either remove itself from this catastrophic conflict or become a collateral casualty.
Remember, it is always within your power not to enter this brand war. If you decide to go this route, it will be at your own peril.
