Decorated veteran of the Pakistan Army, Lt Col (retd) Zafar Abbasi passed away this week at Combined Medical Hospital (CMH) Rawalpindi, said a statement issued here.

Zafar Abbasi was a courageous army officer who sacrificed both hands and legs while performing duties at Siachen in 1987 — he was a captain ranked officer at the time.

Siachen is the highest battlefield in the world.

The veteran, who had his legs and hands amputated due to severe frostbite in 1987, refused to retire and continued to serve the Pakistan Army.

He continued to perform his daily duties with the help of prosthetic limbs.

Lt Col (retd) Zafar Abbas’s courage and valour was immortalised in the extremely popular drama series ‘Alpha, Bravo, Charlie’ in the 1990s.

His story and sacrifice was re-enacted in the drama series and his character was played by Captain Kashif.

Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif also expressed his deepest condolences on the sad demise of Lt Col (retd) Zafar Abbasi.

"Lt Col Zafar Abbasi was a brave Pakistan Army officer who sacrificed both his hands and legs while serving at the worlds' highest battlefront Siachen," said the chief of army staff.
