NEW DELHI: Indian police said Tuesday they had arrested six men after a teenager alleged she was gang-raped after being lured to a hotel on the promise of a job.

The 17-year-old girl told police she had travelled from her home in New Delhi to the western city of Jaipur with neighbours who had promised her work there.

“She was then confined to a hotel where 10 people including the manager took turns to rape her. She managed to escape last week and file a complaint in Delhi,” a police officer told AFP in Delhi.

“Based on her complaint we have arrested six men and we are studying the CCTV footage from the hotel to nab the rest of the suspects,” he said on condition of anonymity.

The alleged attack on August 30 adds to a grim record of sexual assaults in India which have sparked domestic and international outrage.

The fatal gang-rape of a young student on a bus in Delhi in 2012 led to an outpouring of anger over frightening levels of violence against women.

The attack led to a major reform of India's rape laws, speeding up trials and increasing penalties.

Last week three men were convicted for the gang-rape of a young Japanese woman in Jaipur, a popular tourist destination, and sentenced to 20 years in jail.
