Pakistan could become the third largest nuclear stock pile within the next five to ten years, behind only the United States and Russia, the Washington Post reported, quoting reports published by two American think tanks.
The report published on Thursday by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Stimson Center said that Pakistan, out of its fear of India, was far outpacing its rival neighbour in the development of nuclear warheads and may be building 20 nuclear warheads annually.
The report cites analysts as saying that Pakistan possesses around 120 nuclear warheads as compared to India's 100. The report concluded by saying that Pakistan could have at least 350 nuclear weapons within five to 10 years.

Nuclear weapons are no joke. I just hope we are doing everything right and have a tight command and control system. Given what India has been doing we need this deterrent and should keep our policy of "FIRST USE." However, understand this... any nuclear attack today will mean an end of everything and usage will affect the whole region. We must be extremely careful and disciplined about anything nuclear.

This is what Pakistan would need to survive in difficult times if it does come. UK have around 350 or so nuclear arsenals though have no obvious enemy in its neighbourhood. Pakistan have learned from the past experience when it come to difficult situations. Pakistan will have to defend itself at its own defence capabilities and no one will come to help.

India needs deterrence against China, hence the certain number of weapons (100) for deterrence. Our main aim is to provide 24x7 electricity to every household. We even have 'no first use' policy since we know that we have a lot more to lose (economy, investments etc.) if there is a war and that too a nuclear war. Only a country which has nothing to loose produces such disproportionate quantities of nuclear weapons, and drops the N-word at the first opportunity in every rhetoric.

Russia too had huge number of stock. They had to reduce those by destroying. Later Pakistan will have more expenses even to maintain and secure these. Stocking nuclear bombs seems more an emotional issue and trying to show off of superiority. Pakistani politicians, analysts etc either use suffix Inshaallah, or we have nuclear bombs, quite immature(in later case) . Indians are much mature, we have a small sufficient amount of nukes, while are investing money, material, time and effort to other things like rockets, reactors etc too. Today we launched GSLV too.

No doubt - nation priority should be securing their borders but this does not mean you should waste your energy by ignoring all living population.
Im not sure where this world is going and what it is going to prove?
If we and other countries are busy in building these monster weapons and not doing anything for the end users than why dont they stop it for the sake of civilians?
Each of us will love that and will much appreciate our rulers.

Russia had the largest or second largest in the early 90s. Didn't stop them from collapsing and all of us who remember the Yeltsin era know how difficult the situation in Russia was. Country was bankrupt. It's key that Pakistan focuses on its economy as well. Nukes didn't save Russia... Nor will they save Pakistan. High oil prices were Russia's savior.. Don't think Pakistan has such resources to fall back on

Unfortunately they get easily carried away when somebody plays with their emotions with regards to their nation and religion. This is an unofficially accepted universal press censorship within USA. Pakistan has no choice in this matter as it is a smaller country in all respects. India is a vastly superior adversary in terms of conventional military strength. It is the largest buyer of conventional weaponry and added to that its economic clout is growing. If India being a bigger country acts with maturity the arms race can stop. Can the Indian readers on this page ask their Government to show some commitment to long term peace in the subcontinent and turn over a new chapter in Indo-Pak relations. Resolution of the Kashmir issue has far more merits than demerits.

The entire chain of this ' information' is controlled by interested parties. 'They' have failed at every front, hence now the new tactic, scare the jeebies out of every one through the huge nucleaur stock pile/ lost missiles/ terrorits carrying them off like suitcases, reinforced by Hollywood movies and TV series. Nuclear weapons are defensive in nature. They are used more as a deterrence than an offensive tool. Until Pakistan and India figure out how to live in peace next to each other and normalize their relations, I reluctantly support the nuclear arsenal. It will keep the two countries leaders from behaving irresponsibly. Nationalist governments on either side like BJP/Modi are a bigger threat to the stability of the region.

@Adnan your point about focusing on sing poverty eradication is right but please understand that GSLV launch will help India to satellites in space that will improve communication and ultimately benefit nation's economy. India also puts other nation's satellites in space and earns valuable forex. Recently 5 UK satellites were launched at the time by India. NASA satellite will ride an Indian rocket in 2021.

One must understand the dynamics behind all this. Pakistani production of nuclear arsenal is for a reason. When a much larger enemy on the borders talks about war everyday you need to have more than enough deterrence to keep her at bay. you should not weigh nuclear option in isolation. Pakistan has to keep a minimum deterrence level to keep India away. Now it will be almost impossible to match India in conventional warfare because of bigger economy and resources available as it will be difficult to match gun with gun and aircraft with aircraft and ship with a ship. We understand that maintaining nuclear weapons is not cheap but still it is economical than that of conventional warfare. Secondly, we have seen in 1965 and 71 even today westerner nations are not ready to transfer warfare technology and hardware to Pakistan. We are not fools , we need a bigger arsenal to maintain 2nd strike capability and credible nuclear deterrence. and do not worry about electricity we will cater for that as well.

It's going to be who takes the initiative of striking key targets first of strategic importance. Please update your information. Since 80s Pakistan has been doing research in agriculture using nuclear energy introducing new varieties of rice and wheat. We are also using nuclear energy in metallurgy research in developing metals used in industry that are too expensive to import. BTW we just started building two nuclear plants near Karachi for electricity production.

India had the resources and expertise to outdo Pak in production of nuclear armaments but it took more arduous and challenging option of developing productive application of nuclear energy and space technology. The result is evident today . It marks the essential difference in national psyche , thinking pattern and ambition of the two countries .it causes are deep rooted in seperate social echoes and political structure of india and Pak . Pakistan always aimed to be the nuclear powered leader of Muslim world and pursued obsessive goal of military and strategic superiority over india. This ambition also had a facilitating and nurturing support from eminent and at times overpowering position of Pak military in the political structure of Pakistan . That's why economic prosperity and public welfare always took a back seat in planning . Corruption and mismanagement also count but these are common in both countries in varying degrees.

Nuclear bombs take time to load into missiles. Missiles cannot be loaded with fuel and kept ready. So in a war situation, nuke is assembled then missile is loaded with fuel and then with nuke. This increases the cost for Pakistan. Which is what we want. In any case even with 350 nukes Pakistan can barely cover 2% of India whereas India can cover 100% of Pakistani population.

Missiles...Prithvi v1 which has been tested and ready to be transferred to Indian Army has a range of 12500 KM. This range brings all the European capitals within India's nuclear range. China is way behind at about 5000 KM and Pak missiles have a range of 2500 KM. They will not cover the South Indian cities.

@Neel Thank you for highlighting this matter. We are constructing nuclear power plants of 2200 MW near Karachi. After completion this plant will cover 70% power needs of Karachi city. Currently, along with Nuclear power, we are working on hydro power plants, coal and gas, solar power and wind power. With completion of all on going projects power situation in Pakistan will considerably improve. Just a request to Indian friends please ask your government to stop destabilizing Pakistan through RAW. With end of terrorism and economic prosperity in Pakistan, India could be one who can get most benefit from prosperous Pakistan.

The weapons Pakistan has today is enough to take care of any threat (real or imagined) from India. Pakistan should take a cue from us and use the remaining plutonium to improve the power situation in Pakistan.

Not more than a dozen should be kept to deter any enemy. Remaining should be distributed to other needy countries and mint money. This public money can be used for good purpose (really other than negative purposes, say, terrorism etc).
India has two neighbour enemies. Pakistan one (India). In this regard, India should not keep more than 50 nukes. China 80. US and Russia 100 each. Others should be deprived of this dangerous thing. There is every possibility that terrorist group like Al Qaida and IS can a few one from us.

Krepon's report is intended to generate xenophobic Islamophobia in America the identical objective of Israeli officials. Krepon is deceitfully biased towards Israel due to his Jewish heritage deliberately avoiding reports on Israel nuclear proliferation which are the major cause of instability in the Middle East.

But believe me if there is even one nuclear explosion even by by mistake or an accident...the subcontinent is doomed. There can be a mayhem. Though India follows a " No first Use " policy the retaliation time is only 50 or 60 seconds. These weapons have the capacity to destroy the whole Indian or Pakistani race ...na koi dastan sunane wala ..aur na koi dastan sunnae wala rahega !

I know how poor my country fellows are but still we need these things to remain independent. This all goes to single moment when you lost your whole in the hands of your enemy. That is what happening with Palestine, kashmir, myanmar muslims & happened with kosovo, bosnia muslims. Whatever your financials, but you will buy an expensive dog to defend your house from intruders.
We all know how high is the moral of our army leader raheel shareef and one of the reasons is that the enemy too know our capabilities.
Those of you disagree. they need to unlock their main doors before sleeping from now on.

Both countries in a bigger picture, 1.3 billion vs 200 million the makeup of nuclear literate in raw numbers may be the same.BTW India is the country that introduce this menace not Pakistan at least you Indian should acknowledge that and lately who is spending $100.00 billion on new weapon acquisitions? India has a way more advanced nuclear program and is the only country in the world which has the technology to produce low cost tritium which is needed in Hydrogen bombs. If need be, we can make more than 10,000 nuclear weapons (incl. dirty nukes) with the un-safeguarded plutonium we have.

The only authority that can define "credible minimum deterrence" is Pakistan itself, not some think tank with God knows what source of income and agenda. How can a someone belonging to a country possessing thousands of active warheads, also being the sole actual user of nukes on earth, determine who should have how many.

I seriously doubt the veracity of this report. China definitely should be ahead. Yes, the smooth and silent operators Israelis should be ahead too.

Anyway if it turns out true, who so many? Pakistan has made a point and India knows it will not think twice to use it and is a serious deterrence.
I really think both nations have so many poor folks that need more attention and that should be the priority.
We know India is in many ways is showing the courage to deal with it as Corporate Governance is taking over, whether it is for good or bad, it is uplifting the poor.

The race for Nuclear power and Warheads will go on Between Pakistan and India , We were in Big Crisis and the Only Thing That Kept other Countries from Easily Attacking us was The Nuclear Program . Our Army is Excellent .. Nuclear Powers , Missile Capabilities , Best Intelligence Agency , Worlds First SSG Commandos and Third Best Pilots . I Thinks We should gain more Nuclear Power which will Helped in the Solidarity of Pakistan. Yes We should make Make Electricity and Stuff but Electricity Doesn't Defend our Country .

Calling it third largest is highly misleading. UK, France and China have Hydrogen bombs. India and Israel probably have it too. So the total arsenal of Pakistan is much smaller compared to UK, France and China, let alone US and USSR. And it is probably even smaller than Israel and India. I am not in favor of these devices but just want to point out that this statement, even if technically true, is highly misleading.
