Army chief approves increase in military courts for Karachi

KARACHI: Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday approved an increase in the number of military courts for Karachi to handle outstanding terror cases.
General Sharif took the decision while chairing the security briefing at Corps V Headquarters. He was also briefed on the current security situation of the city.

The security briefing was also attended by the Corps Commander, Director General (DG) Rangers Major General Bilal Akbar, DG Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asim Bajwa, Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Hyder Jamali and representatives from the intelligence agencies.

He commended all ranks of the Rangers, police, intelligence agencies and the people of Karachi for their support on the occasion.
The chief of army staff also directed all concerned authorities to continue the security operation across the board, and break the nexus that exists between terrorism, criminal mafias and corruption to ensure peace and prosperity in the commercial hub of the country.
In order to increase the operational capacity of Karachi's police forces, equipment worth Rs65 million was handed over, while training for the same has been completed.

Earlier in the day, the army chief visited Army Air Defence center in Karachi's Malir Cantonment area and laid floral wreath at the Yadgar-i-Shuhada monument.
Army chief General Raheel Sharif was briefed about the training activities at the center which was founded in 1989.

He also pinned the badges of rank on the shoulders of Lieutenant General Zamir Ul Hassan Shah, Adjutant General Pakistan Army to formally install him as Colonel Commandant of Army Air Defence.
General Raheel Sharif also addressed all officers and men of the Garrison. He is also scheduled to visit Corps V Headquarters also known as Karachi Corps later during the day.
Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif arrived in Karachi, on Monday evening amid strict security, to review the overall security situation of the provincial capital city.

Good but would be better if political leadership is taking the lead in addressing security situation in the city and the country. General is taking care of all matters of internal security and foreign affairs. The poor guy is burdened with too much tasks while Nawaz govt is relaxing.

@SUNIL No, Kiyani wasn't rated very high. The opinions depends on active involvement and being the difference maker to people. Musharraf & Zia have a very polarized opinion in public. Raheel Shareef so far enjoys a popular support thanks to the much needed initiatives he has undertaken.

@Sajid Abbasi well, quite honestly Karachi doesn't expect much good to come from so called political leadership anyways. Only good Karachi has seen is always during military rule, be it under Musharraf or Raheel Shareef. Our PM is more busy traveling to fairyland and caucuses in Kazakhistan than to care about Karachi, just like he was away overseas and Army was here among Safora Goth victims relatives during Eid.

Good decision! Under the watch of these civilian courts the bloodshed in Karachi became uncontrollable, so we definitely need the military courts. I believe the judges and lawyers of the civilian courts must also be put on trial in the military courts because they are every bit as responsible for Karachi's spiraling violence as the actual criminals are.

Kiyani was a lame duck for most part as far the terrorism was concerned. Gen. Raheel is indeed extremely popular, in some surveys it has been 87% popularity among general public.

@SUNIL No Not All COAS are highly rated and respected. His predecessor , Kayani, was probably the worst ever, supported by Zardari and his cronies. He never took any action against the terrorist sanctuaries and was busy promoting his brothers business.This Sharif is a 'khandanhi General' and t in my opinion the best that Pakistan has produced. Every Pakistani is proud of him and the Pakistani Army. The present Army is the only saviour of this country.

salute to our army in general and to the General Rahil Sharif in particular. unlike their predecessors, they have truly proved that they are the saviour of our country. The move to establish new more military courts is highly appreciated. But, the prevailing tention between the apex court and LEAs over the validity of military courts is distressing. All the countrys institutions should ally thier apprehensions , mistrust on eachother and come up with mutually decided formula to coup with militancy. eliminating extremism n terrorism from our society demands coprehensive approach taking on board all stakeholders.

@SUNIL As far as I know, this general is rated higher than any other in Pakistan. The reason is that he doesn't seem to be power hungry, calls spade a spade and works really hard. In short, his actions suggest that he is a true soldier. His words suggest that he is a very respectable man.

If Army chief really wants peace in Karachi and also thinks as a loyal Pakistani (not belong to any region or having any 'ism') than he should force local body election and make sure that those who runs the affairs of Karachi, including policing and administration at highest level, are not only from Karachi but are representatives of Karachi (came through free and fair election).
On top of that assurance, he should make sure that there is efficient, hardworking, god fearing, and honest NAB, intelligence agency, judiciary and law enforcement agencies in Karachi consisting of people born in Karachi ... and that their recruitment are done completely on merit, free from all political influences. Any corruption found in these bodies should be punished severely.
Do that, and we will see a peaceful, progressing and prosperous Karachi.
