NEW DELHI: While several reports described them as cross-border militants — The Indian Express says they are the first known Lashkar-e-Taiba combat unit to have entered through the Punjab border — Monday’s armed standoff in India’s Gurdaspur border town has set off an alert over a possible Sikh upsurge.
The Hindu said on Tuesday that India’s external intelligence agency RAW had alerted the government of Sikh militant resurgence across the globe and highlighted a new bonding developing between Punjabi and Kashmiri separatists.
It said a little more than a month ago RAW sent a report to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), detailing the resurgence of “Sikh radical organisations” across the globe.

The report was sent on June 16 and it spoke about the activities of Sikh radical organisations in countries such as Germany, UK, France, US, Pakistan and Malaysia.
The Hindu quoted the report as saying that on June 6 in Germany, Sikh radical organisations such as Babbar Khalsa International (BKI-G) and Sikh Federation (SF-G) staged a protest in front of the Consulate General of India, Frankfurt.
“The event was attended by 8-10” people of Pakistani or AJK origin as well. “A few new Sikh families, which arrived from Portugal, were also seen participating in the protest.”
According to the RAW report, “a Kashmiri youth also spoke at length saying Kashmiris supported the demand for Khalistan…There was an increase in the number of protesters this year in comparison to last year,” said the report.
Similarly in U.K., according to the paper, radical groups under the banner of Sikh Federation held a remembrance march and freedom rally to commemorate the 31st anniversary of Operation Blue Star. Around 3,000 people attended the event. It was also attended by several British parliamentarians and also Raja Ahmad Khan, Chairman, All Parties Kashmir Coordination Committee.
One speaker called upon the Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir to revive their efforts to secure self-determination in their respective homelands.
In the US, the RAW report suggested that a fiery woman speaker who has delivered anti-India speeches has come to notice. In San Francisco, around 60-70 people participated in anti-India protests while in other parts of California, around 6000-8000 people attended a similar meet. There have been concerns that the BKI and Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) — both banned in India — were trying to regroup with the help of Pakistan’s ISI, The Hindu said.

This is just hearsay and nonsense. Sikhs are thriving in India and overseas. The vast majority of the Sikh homeland is in Pakistan anyway especially Nankana Sahib, lahore district, Rawalpindi and the Potohar and Attock area, and the Indian Punjab only makes a quarter of the Sikh homeland. Sikhs new today homeland is Canada, as Sikhs call it Kenayda.

@NT Sikhs are realizing quickly how important is their own homeland (Punjab) to them and the Kashmir issue which is bleeding for years can only be settled amicably if the Sikhs movement and Kashmir movement strengthen each other for a common goal. India-Pakistan dialogue will also get a balanced platform in that scenario.

As per my friend's father Sh H L Sahni, who migrated from Attok to Delhi during 1947 partition, Sikhs are none other than Khatri Hindus who have taken the vow to Sikhism to protect the community and motherland. As per the tradition of those days every Hindu family was required to place one son of their family to become a Sikh by taking that vow and accept 5 K - Kirpan, Khada, Kesh etc., in his life style. Sh H L Sahni was also supposed to take Sikhism at his age of 6 years but could not due to migration to Indian side. That is the very reason many of surnames like Singh, Sahni, Arora, etc., are common to both Hindus and Sikhs. Khalistan concept may be due to reminiscence of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's empire of Greater Punjab.

In India, Sikhs and Hindus reconciled after a brief period of madness. It appears that the Sikhs that left India for US, Canada and Europe, understandably with wounds, haven't... and still live in the memories of the days of conflict, even though people here moved on. Today, in India, Sikhs are celebrated for all their unique qualities. It would not be India without them.

The Sikh community was born 500 years ago from the Hindu mainstram society to protect against the repressions of the Moghul rulers of that time . Even today they are intermingled in our society that few of our family members are sikhs. My own grand mother is a sikh. We cherish the same culture . They are the main force of our armed forces . All this talk is a mere speculation and a wild wish of the enemies of India.

While I respect the sentiments of all communities. However, I must bring it to the notice of all that the Langar Hall of the Gurudwara in Fremont, California has large pictures of Sikh militants on display. Some local community members had opposed it earlier but it seems that Temple Administration has not taken any action.

@Realist Partition of India benefinned me and millions like me. We have a much greater say in our affairs then we would have in a United India. We have statesmen, diplomats, officers, businessmen, educationalists in a much much larger volume today then we had before India was devided - and stand more prosperous then our Muslim families we left behind in India (Sachar Report). How ever, it did not benefit those millions who died in the independence violence which has left unadressed wounds which continue to bleed Pakistan and India.

Sikhs are ALWAYS resurgent. They prosper in India,and they prosper every where.
In British Colombia,Sikhs were the first community from the sub continent to settle down are are active in lumber industry and own saw mills in a big way.They own a lot of big trucking companies as well.
In California,a Sikh farmer who came in 70's and who used to work for about a $ 1 /hour is now the largest peach farmer in that state.
As,I assert,Sikhs are resurgent and prosperous the world over!:)

While 99% of Sikh are acclaimed hardworker and 'go-getters' there is still 1% unemployed youth in Punjab who can be lured to terrorism. In this case, funds reaching J&K youth have been extended to Punjab youth. In any case, recently there has been new round of funding by uncle Sam!!

@gurpreet There is no element of subservience or looking down upon in the jokes. Sikh community of India has been always known as large hearted fun-loving people. As a sikh myself, I love my country & there is not even an iota of us versus them regarding other Indians.
Anyway, we'll go bonkers living alone as a separate nation. Any society founded on religion as principle is bound to invite troubles for itself. The simple reason for it being that the relegation of non-majority religions as second class citizens.
Also, on a lighter note, there is only so much of Honey Singh I can handle :)

The Sikhs are indeed a very brave and proud nation with a very different form of civilization from the Hindus. They are in minority and have been constantly mistreated by the Hindu majority who uses them as their main workhorse. Their main center of religion. the Golden Temple. was most hideously and ruthlessly desecrated by the Hindu government of India, and it would certainly be dishonored again if the circumstances arose again to do so. The Sikhs are a very talented people, as is very obvious from the performance of their communities living in foreign countries. They certainly have a right to be called a separate nation and demand independence from clutches of the Hindus.

The first Genocide of Sikhs in 1742 was carried out by a Hardcore Hindu of Lahore, Lakhpat Rai (belonged to Kot Lakhpat area of Lahore) and last Genocide of Sikh too was done in 1984 by a Hindu Prime minister, Indira Gandhi. These two are undeniable facts and is the part of Sikh History.

What i recommend for INDO-PAK is: stop hurling liabilities againt each other and walk side by side to check assassination. Above report is giving birth to a civil war in India. Do remember what India did in 1971. Invaded Pakistan after nurturing and supporting an armed rebellion in East Pakistan. By breaking up Pakistan, India expects us to forget and turn the other cheek. India needs to give freedom to the Kashmir, unfortunately in its arrogance it continues to brutally oppress the Kashmiris right to self determination.

I would be extremely careful in investing any money in India as I predict that such attacks are just the beginning of the new India. I am now looking at investing in Pakistan as IMF is projecting an eight (8%) GDP. Iran may also be a good option.

Sikh Diaspora in USA is very anti-India. They feel that Sikhs are treated as 2nd class Citizens in India and discriminated against. They point to injustice done to Sikhs after the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh Bodyguards. There is strong and genuine resentment among Sikhs against Hindu rulers of India.

Sikhs blend in so easily with Europeans especially their looks and features that it is no surprise that many Sikhs have migrated to the West. Majority of my Sikh friends do not even care about Khalistan anyway because they are so westernized. Many of the Sikhs that I know cannot even speak Punjabi anymore and have western names like bobby Gill or Jimmy Sirna.

If the martial race Sikhs decide to have their own independent homeland, the Mother India would just disintegrate into various linguistic Motherlands. Majority of forces in India comprise Sikhs and their separation would endlessly weaken the Indian forces of every classification.
There are 169 distinct languages spoken in India with each group having its unique customs and way of life. They are all loosely bound under the Secular Constitution of India but hopelessly unhappy against the ruthless holds of the so called high-casts.

I wish I knew the Sikh history in detail. Khuswant Singh's book on Sikh history would be a great place to start with?
Sikhism was a reform movement of Hindus which started in Punjab.
Sikh gurus traveled to Iraq and down south to Sri Lanka too ( if I am right!) to spread Sikhism.
The sturdy,upright,independent character of Sikhs is something to do with the breath of defiance against the tyranny of the Mughals.
Had India experienced a spread of Sikhism outside Punjab,the Sikh diligence would seen to it that there were no Terai ( forests would have turned farmlands!) in other parts of India as well?
I have seen Sikhs in small towns of Tamilnadu selling motor parts and running workshops to repair cars.and,I have seen them prospering in a big way in British Colombia...very industrious and enterprising!:)

There are many misconceptions floating around on this forum.
1. Sikhism was created to fight Mughals. No! Sikhism is just one of the many reform movements within Dharmic traditions, which was called a "panth" or a "way" within the larger context of Dharma. The area where it developed, was traditionally the border areas of India, and which has had the major influence from societies and cultures beyond India. Sikhism was a Sanatan Dharma religious tradition, also influenced by Sufi Islam. Since it was born among so called martial races, it has a warrior streak ingrained in it. Yes, it fought against tyranny and religious oppression of Mughals, but their scope was mostly limited to Punjab. The ones who fought most against mughals and finally rooted them out of power were Marathas.
In fact, no matter who ruled delhi, the Rajputs and Marathas always stayed independent. Punjab was resurrected as a non-muslim power by Sikhs, in the form of Khalsa Empire of Ranjit Singh.

Well before 1850, when Britishers conquered Princely states in subcontinent, there was no india. There were independent states. And Sikhs had their own state. It was British that knitted up India in its present form. Otherwise there always been separate independent states loosely knit together.

I am a Hindu and some of my closest friends are Sikhs and Muslims. I visit Gurudwara every Sunday and have seen all religion integrated well in our indian society. Yes, jokes are made on sikhs, just like they are made on mallus (like me), madrasis, biharis, north eastern, delhiites. We are big on racism, lets face it. Not once, did I take them personally and some of them r funny if u look at them objectively. @Gurpreet this comment of urs was really really stupid on splitting bcoz there r jokes which implies that they are unwanted. Every Sikh is respected, only those who don't know the history or aren't exposed enough to cross culture make statements like this.

Sikhism was formed to protect to protect Hindus religion and Hindus from.. we all know whom. Eldest son in each Hindu family was made a Sikh. It is very common to see Hindus and Sikhs in same family even now. Intermarriages are so common between Hindu and Sikhs.

whoever did this.. could we focus on the evidence provided by Indian side? I mean how lame would be those who brought GPS with them to the site of attack? I mean who runs around with such evidence when doing a covert operation? Its a subcontinental thing that has deep roots in our culture, when you want to frame your enemies you do such things. that happens in local feuds as well. To make your case strong when submitting a FIR report you do such things. And that's what India is doing.
You may be right in all your blames.. but please put forward some "concrete evidence".
