KARACHI: Parts of Karachi received the first rain of the year’s monsoon season on Tuesday and, according to the Met office, recurrent showers are likely over “the next 48 hours”.

Almost the entire city received moderate to heavy rains, badly affecting the power supply system. The sewerage system was unable to cope with the sudden cloudburst worsening the misery of Karachiites.

“The current spell of rain is normal as monsoon in Karachi normally starts on July 15 and ends on Sept 15,” said an official at the Met office. “More widespread rains and thundershower are expected in Karachi as well as in Mirpurkhas, Larkana, Hyderabad and Sukkur divisions over the next 48 hours and the institutions concerned have been informed about this forecast for precautionary measures,” the official said.

There was no word from the Met office about the amount of rain received in Karachi, but the downpour turned the city’s weather pleasant.
