GUJRAT: The Punjab government has allocated Rs5.6 billion for 31 new development schemes in the Gujrat district in the annual development budget for the current fiscal year.

This was stated by District Coordination Officer Liaquat Ali Chatha while chairing a meeting of different executing agencies of the government here on Friday.

The meeting was told that development schemes would be executed in education, roads infrastructure, health and family planning, irrigation, livestock, public health and sports and the implementation of schemes would be reviewed after 10 days as officials concerned had been directed to initiate the groundwork.

The DCO said the most significant uplift scheme was the construction of a bridge over Chenab river near Shahbazpur area of Jalalpur Jattan at a cost of Rs2 billion.

While Rs654 million had been allocated for the construction of an academic block at the Nawaz Sharif Medical College.

He said that Rs186 million were allocated for the provision of missing facilities in educational institutions of the district while Rs242 million would be spent on the construction of sports stadiums in Kotla, Sara-i-Alamgir, Swedish College of Technology Gujrat, Khadriala. He said around 20 grounds for sports activities would also be established in various rural areas of the district.
