LAHORE: Eight new biogas plants will be installed in rural union councils of the city besides a hospital waste treatment and disposal plant, construction and demolition waste treatment and recycling plant in the upcoming financial year.

Part of around Rs13 billion budget for the 2015-16 fiscal, the projects were approved in the 34th meeting of the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) Board of Directors on Tuesday.

Presided over by LWMC’s Board of Directors Chairman Khwaja Ahmad Hassan, also the chief minister’s adviser, the meeting reviewed and approved projects pertaining to construction of two cells of a sanitary landfill site, internal audit report for second and third quarter of 2014-15 financial year and employees’ provident fund trust and health insurance policy besides confirmation of the incumbent managing director for the next three years.

A sum of Rs2.1 billion has been earmarked for development projects in the next financial year; out of the total Rs10 billion allocated for non-development expenditures, Rs6.2 billion is for operations, Rs1.7 billion for waste treatment and disposal project, Rs2.6 million for labour cost and Rs264 million for head office expenses.

Approval was also granted to the construction of two new cells of sanitary landfill site, purchase of machinery for it, rehabilitation of Mehmood Booti dumpsite, purchase of land for two transfer stations and fabrication and installation of 6,000 waste bins.

The meeting also approved 100pc increase in financial assistance for permanent employees in case of death on duty from Rs200,000 to Rs400,000, provision of group insurance, social security and Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution facility to contractor’s workers, health insurance for corporate employees and formation of employee’s provident fund trust.
