Peshawar bans export of beef, poultry to Afghanistan

PESHAWAR: The district administration of Peshawar on Tuesday banned the export of poultry and cattle to Afghanistan to control skyrocketing meat prices in Ramazan.

Peshawar Deputy Commissioner Riaz Khan Mehsud’s office said in a circular that the ban has been imposed for a month under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The decision has been taken in order to bring down climbing prices of poultry and beef in the provincial capital.

Illegal export of mutton, beef, chicken and livestock to Afghanistan has been going on for decades, often impacting the local market, especially on occasions like Eidul Azha and Ramazan.

Export of food itmes including poultry and meat should be banned until we have sufficent inhouse production to meet the need of the local population. The ban should not just be to Afghanistan but to other countries including the Middle East. For exporters the relaxation could be in two forms i.e. either allowing exports to oly those companies who have invested in establishing their own farms so that the local market prices are not effected or apply an export duty of say 20% - 25% so that there is a clear benefit to the country in export of these goods.
