Sindh police

Published May 29, 2015

THERE is a wave of euphoria because the Sindh police have hit the jackpot. In one go they have solved not only the Safoora Goth massacre , but also Sabeen Mehmud’s murder and a plethora of other crimes. Cash is being showered on them and medals are being distributed (prematurely?) on the performers of this extraordinary feat. Some veteran columnists have fallen, hook, line and sinker, for the official version.

However, my personal experience is an indicator as to how the police can apparently cook up highly plausible stories, I am reluctant to accept as true.

I was once accused of arson, a crime punishable with 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment. It was amazing how the police carefully spun the story that on the face of it clinched like the stories being circulated about Saad Aziz, for instance.

Who would not believe that a government officer, who had misappropriated a huge amount of public money, would get the wind up after receiving the notice of the visit of an audit party and, to destroy records, set his office on fire?

With amazement I watched the prosecution witnesses stating the sequence of events without batting an eyelid. Yet, the case was false and fell to pieces. Something similar may happen in this case as well. So let us wait instead of passing judgement.
