GUJRAT: The University of Gujrat launched its first three-day book fair here on Monday at its Hafiz Hayat Campus.

UoG Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ziaul Qayyum inaugurated the event at a ceremony.

The book fair is being held at the main halls of Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin Central Library of the varsity.

There are more than 60 stalls with books on a variety of subjects ranging from computer sciences, fiction, Islamic literature, medicine, engineering and technology to anthropology, basic sciences and politics.

Known publishers, local as well as foreign, booksellers and distributors are participating in the event displaying thousands of books and offering discounted rates ranging from 15 to 30 percent.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, VC Dr Zia Ul-Qayyum said books were a powerful sign of intellectual and collective life of a people, showing their quest for knowledge.

He said the large number of students, visiting the stalls, was a proof of popularity of books in our society.

UoG Registrar Dr Tahir Aqil said books helped us discover new paths in life.

Dr Mushahid Anwar said the main objective of the fair was to promote desire for learning among the students.

Media Director Sheikh Abdul Rashid said book reading led us to a saner and balanced view of life.

On the first day, hundreds of students visited the fair and purchased a good number of books.
