Injured Irfan ruled out of World Cup

Pakistan's ace fast bowler Mohammad Irfan has been ruled out of the World Cup on Tuesday after the seven foot tall left-armer failed to recover from a “stress fracture in the pelvis”.
Irfan had undergone a MRI scan a day earlier. The radiologist’s report showed a stress injury of the pelvis.
Brad Robinson, Pakistan's physiotherapist, later asked for a detailed scan which confirmed an obvious injury of serious nature.
“This injury rules Irfan out of the World Cup,” Robinson said.
The left-armer suffered a recurrence of his hip injury during Pakistan's crucial game against South Africa but managed to complete the match, playing a pivotal role in the 29-run victory.
He was ruled out of the next game against Ireland, a must-win encounter for both sides. Though Pakistan emerged unscathed from the battle, it will be a major blow for Misbah-ul-Haq to lead without the firepower of Irfan against tournament-favourites Australia.
However, the Pakistani think tank has decided to wait till the outcome of Friday's quarter-final against Australia before asking the selection committee for a replacement.
The development would be a bitter pill for Pakistan to swallow who are already without the services of key bowlers Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Gul and Junaid Khan for the World Cup.
According to the Pakistan captain, the pace trio Wahab Riaz, Sohail Khan and Mohammad Irfan had filled the void left by the absence of the stars bowlers brilliantly and were instrumental in keeping the Greenshirts alive in the World Cup.

The management knows that there is fitness problem for him. But they went too cautiously and played this match winner with small teams also. Pakistan's problem in this world cup is not players but cowardliness of the captain, coach, whole supporting staff and management.

Yasir shah should play in place of Irfan. Irfan injury could be a blessing in disguise for Pakistan Team. We all know Aussies are excellent players of Pace bowling. 3 seamers (Rahat, Wahab, Sohail) plus three spinners (Yasir, Afridi and Haris) is a well-balanced attack against aussies at Adelaide. I wish we could play Hafeez in place of Afridi!

Who is the genius behind the idea of not asking for a replacement till the outcome of the quarter final against Australia? Either this genius knows that Pakistan will win or he's trying to save up some money at the expense of whatever these guys have achieved so far in the tournament. Ajmal and Hafeez are both available, both are fit and both are allowed to return to international cricket and either of them would be a huge boost to the side. They have played enough cricket to go in without having much match practice but PCB comes up with a terrific idea yet again of doing the unthinkable, RIP PCB!!

Poor planning by Pak management. Irfan's replacement should have been ready to catch a plane before Irfan boarded the original team. Why was the MRI not performed after the SA game where he was injured ? His tall frame is injury prone and has been well known.

@apoorva There are countless comments by Indian supporters about Pakistan's 6 losses to India in world cup. What is the big deal? Did India win all world cups after beating Pakistan in Pool matches? No, India only won the world cup once after beating Pakistan in the semi final of 2011 on home ground. India first beat Pakistan in the 1992 world cup at league stage in Australia. While Pakistan lifted the world cup, India did not even reach the semi final. In 1996 India beat Pak in the quarter finals but lost to Sri Lanka in the semi final after the Indian crowed created ugly scenes in Kolkatta and the match was awarded to Sri Lanka. In 1999 India beat Pakistan at league stage but failed to reach the semi final. Whereas Pakistan went on to play the Final but lost to Australia. In 2003 India beat Pakistan at the league stage and ended up runners up to Australia. In 2007 India and Pakistan did not meet each other but both teams were ousted from the tournament at league stage. In 2011 Pakistan lost to India in the semi final in Mohali and this was the only time when India beat Pakistan and won the world cup. Again we will have to wait and see whether India will lift the 2015 world cup. The Indians should remember that Pakistan has won more ODIs against India than India has won against Pakistan. Losses to India notwithstanding, Pakistan's overall performance in world cup since 1975 is better than India.
