KASUR: At least 10 girl students and their teacher suffered injuries on Friday when roof of their classroom collapsed in a private school on the Nizampura Road. Three students were referred to Lahore in a critical condition.

Reports said 9th grade students were attending a lecture in the Bhasarpura area when the roof that was in a dilapidated condition collapsed on them. As a result, teacher Abid Ali, and students, namely Sadia, Sobia, Khizra, Maryam, Mamona, Anam, Rabia, Kinza, Aqsa and Samar suffered injuries.

Locals took out the injured from the rubble. The injured were taken to a private hospital from where Sadia, Sobia and Khizra were referred to the Lahore General Hospital in a critical condition.

B-Division police arrested Shakeel Ahmed, the principal of the school, after registering a case against him and the school owner, Tahir Mahmood.

District Coordination Officer (DCO) Adnan Arshad Aulakh reached the school and issued orders to seal it.

He formed a three-member inquiry team, comprising Additional District Collector Muhammad Shahid, District Officer Coordination Muhammad Rafique and EDO Education Zulifqar Ahmed, to look into the incident.

The inquiry team would also report to the DCO on the condition of other private schools in the district.

DIES: A motorcyclist died in an accident on the Gandasingh Road in the limits of Sadar Police Station.

Muhammad Naeem of Mahmoodpura was hit by a speeding van and he died on the spot.

PROTEST: Residents of Basti Barat Shah and Basti Kamal Chishti staged a protest demonstration against the TMA over accumulated rainwater in their area.

They blocked the road near Kamal Chishti Chowk and chanted slogans against the authorities for neglecting the area particularly after recent rains. They said that the areas were submerged in the rainwater and the TMA did not respond to their complaints.

BRICK KILNS: Dozens of brick kilns are reluctant to provide details of workers to avoid the issuance of social security cards and fixed salaries.

This was disclosed in a meeting DCO Kasur Adnan Arshad Aulakh had with the relevant district officers and other stakeholders.

The district has 298 brick kilns where 3,947 families are working and 48 of them refused to give details of the workers.

The DCO established a committee for getting details of the brick kilns and to deal with the owners in accordance with the labour laws.

He said 1,140 workers had been issued social security cards and efforts were under way to achieve hundred percent target.
