Claude Oscar Monet was one of the leading figures in the Impressionist movement and he painted this canvas in 1878 titled ‘The Seine near Vetheuil, Stormy Weather’ (29.75 inches x 39.5 inches). The artist consistently painted scenery and leisure activities of Paris and its surroundings throughout his distinguished career. It is famously said that Monet led the way to 20th century modernism by developing a distinctive technique that captured on canvas the very act of perceiving nature. Like other Impressionist artists he also worked outdoors and his paintings reflect the ever-changing impact of light and weather conditions.

The artist travelled through France in 1880s and painted an array of landscapes and settled finally in Giverny, near Pairs. He painted some of his most famous artworks here including this painting. It is in private collection these days. — M.I.
