Charlie Hebdo publishes first cover since attack

PARIS: The French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo is publishing its first issue since extremists killed 12 people at its offices last week.

The newspaper Liberation hosted Charlie Hebdo staff as they prepared the new issue and is handling its special one million-copy print run in numerous languages.

Liberation published the Charlie Hebdo cover online late Monday night, ahead of the satirical magazine's publication on Wednesday.

The cartoon shows a bearded man holding a sign reading “Je suis Charlie” (“I am Charlie").

Overhead was the phrase: “Tout est Pardonne” (“All is Forgiven").

Last week's attack, regarded as the worst terrorist rampage in France in decades, followed Charlie Hebdo's publications carrying what have been widely perceived as caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him).

Some witnesses who were present at Charlie Ebdo's offices at the time of the attack had reported that the attackers at the paper's offices shouted: “We have avenged the prophet.”

Muslims believe all images of the prophet are blasphemous.

The magazine has published again a bearded man. Why didn't the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo publish cartoons of dead victims including their editor with sarcastic remarks over their dead bodies? Probably, that would have been derogatory mocking the souls and their living families and friends. Weekly is very much aware how to offend and not to offend the masses. Is it freedom of speech or abuse?

I am not Charlie and neither am I vigilante murderer. I don't believe in offending people's deep held faiths with silly and derogatory cartoons. It serves no journalistic value other than to offend and spread resentment in society. And it's not about freedom of speech either. Last time they printed an anti Semitic cartoon in 2009, the cartoonist was fired and went to jail. It's freedom of (selective) speech. Hypocrites.

The extremist's murderous action has only brought more disrespect for our beloved Prophet (pbuh). Hope the extremists are happy now or were they so naive not to expect it?! Islam does not permit murder for apostasy or disrespect, it is only an extremist wrong interpretation. They defame Islam by carrying out murder in the name of Islam which literally means peace.

Why always crying and losing time on religion, it is killing more than anything. People are thinking about their lives after death and ignoring the welfare of living with human beings and they call themselves humans. Why to live in middle age cultures and backward religions instead of living together working and eating together. In Africa and middle east , Afghanistan and Pakistan Muslims are killing Muslims and we are asking why other countries are not condemning this. It is just because we are not even able to have a decent life in our countries and protect our lives except doing war with neighboring countries and killing our population. See the situation of Muslim women in Gulf countries it is worse than anywhere and they thing that they are of great birth, it is a shame. Let us think and act if we are able and not always criticism others. We are not even able to have clean water and cleanliness in our countries.

@sethi You can certainly question the holocaust in the US or UK, for example. It is true that in some (most?) European countries there are restrictions on certain speech. However, if you do publish a cartoon questioning the holocaust, no jewish extremists will shoot you to death.

In a truely free society, you have the freedom to express yourself offensively. This only means no force shall be used against you for your speech. It does not mean there are no consequences. You can lose friends, your job, your clients etc., and others may speak freely against you, so it cuts both ways. However, when someone (citizens or the state) uses force to stifle offensive speech, that is when freedom is lost.

Those 3 are all the same thing. The first two are actions that are likely to directly result in physical harm to other persons or property. "Offending a person" by criticizing abstract ideas is not the same thing. I would agree that offending someone individually (eg because of a handicap, race, sex or sexuality) is harassment. However, criticizing or mocking ideas that are cultural, political or religious, and do not target specific individual persons is protected free speech.

Religion is above all these things... So if one mocks your religion or religious figures it's better not to react and stand defiant. But not with guns and violence but with love, peace and patience. Even a delicate and beautiful flower like lotus grows on a murky and dirty pond. But does that snatches away its beauty. NO... So if a small and delicate flower can do that then we humans are stronger enough to bear any sort of personal or ideological attack. Don't tell others what they shouldn't or should do but tell yourself what should I do that serves best for my religion, my people and my country

@Drunk Minion If freedom of expression is limitless why are there laws against hate speech in every country? Your freedom ends where my nose begins. Had France acted on it's own law consistently when the hate speeches were directed against Muslims, and not only when they were directed against Jews earlier, this reprehensible incident need never have occurred.

To clarify more about European law. An opinion given in print media which may be perceived as insult by some groups is allowed. however the same opinion targeted at an individual is harassment/bullying depending on the circumstances. for instance if I would put a Charlie Hebdo issue on a Muslim coworkers office desk or approach somebody in the street for wearing traditional Islamic dress and verbally insulting him would be against the law. I think this is a pretty good balancing of individual rights.

@bauke Earlier only a magzine or 2 had shown such caricature. Today I woke up and saw each news website in Germany and other european countries, and each newspaper has these printed the first page of Charlie Hebdo. Till the attack only one newspaper had shown it in Germany and was set on fire. But today all papers are doing it deliberately. Except Pakistan where they call him a beard man but afraid to show a "beard man" and India where yesterday a 9 yrs old was arrested for posting a "beard man" pic on FB.
