ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Shah on Tuesday said that he is ready to mediate between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the larger interest of the country if asked to do so.

Speaking to the media, he said the prevailing political situation is not in Pakistan's favour, as it was portraying a negative image of the country to the world.

He condemned the Faisalabad incident and urged the government to show restraint and hold dialogue with PTI from where it ended.

Responding to a question, Shah said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) being a seasoned party, is with the government not for any personal gains but to save the system, democracy, the Constitution and Parliament.

Lauding the appointment of the new chief election commissioner (CEC), he said the appointment is purely on merit and with consensus of all political parties excluding the PTI, as it did not cooperate in the matter.

He held election tribunals responsible for the current political instability and urged CEC to take action against those who did not perform properly within the stipulated time.

Regarding provincial members of election commission, he proposed that they should resign voluntarily as they have been accused of pre-poll rigging in the 2013 General Elections.

The opposition leader repeated his demand for decreasing the government's tenure to four years, saying it is in the interest of the government and the state.
