KARACHI: A young man whose father and an uncle were shot dead in earlier ‘sectarian’ attacks was gunned down in the Supermarket area of Liaquatabad on Tuesday, police said.

They added that Basharat Ali, 25, was attacked by gunmen near Hashmi Imambargah in Liaquatabad-4.

He sustained critical wounds and was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The police said they suspected that he might have been targeted on sectarian grounds.

A spokesperson for the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen said that the young man’s father, Kamber Ali, and uncle Maulana Ghulam Amini, an MWM leader, were also targeted in the city in separate incidents in the recent past.

MQM worker gunned down

A senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement worker was shot dead in Baldia Town on Tuesday evening, the police said.

They added that Hanif Mohammed, 34, was busy supervising plumbing work in Baldia 5 ½ when two gunmen appeared there and attacked him, said Baldia SP Shaukat Shani.

He sustained critical wounds on his chest and was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died during treatment.

The victim was a worker of the MQM and also active in welfare activities in the area, added the police officer.

Man shot dead in Kalakot

A 55-year-old man was shot dead in Kalakot on Tuesday evening.

The police said Yar Mohammed was attacked by gunmen near Molvi Usman Park in Singu Lane. He sustained three bullet wounds on his chest and was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The motive for the killing could not be ascertained immediately.
