Over 200 lawmakers suspended for not declaring assets, liabilities

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday suspended over 200 members of the parliament and provincial assemblies for not submitting their statements of assets and liabilities by the given deadline.

A suspension notification issued by the ECP said that the legislators will not be able to attend parliament or provincial assembly sessions as long as their memberships remain suspended.

According to DawnNews, a total of 212 lawmakers failed to submit their details of assets and liabilities.

These included 40 members of the National Assembly, two members of the Senate, 98 members of the Punjab Assembly, 29 members of the Sindh Assembly, 34 members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly, and nine members of the Balochistan Assembly.

Some names among those suspended include: Owais Muzaffar Tappi, Chaudhry Jaffar Iqbal, Danial Aziz, Mohsin Shahnawaz, Zulfiqar Bhatti, Faisal Jamal Ghulam Rabbani Khar, Owais Leghari, Pir Sadruddin Shah, Arif Alvi, Shugafta Jamali, Senator Abdul Qayyum Soomro, Senator Mohammad Yousuf, Sirajul Haq, Raja Pervez Ashfaq, Naghma Mushtaq and Tariq Maseeh.

Under Section 42-A of the Representation of Peoples’ Act, 1976 and Section 25-A of the Senate (Elections) Act, 1975, all members of the parliament and provincial assemblies are required to submit with the ECP yearly statements of assets and liabilities of their own as well as spouses and dependents by Sept 30.

The ECP under the law is to notify ‘by October 15’ the names of those who do not submit their statements by the last prescribed date (Sept 30) and to direct that such members will cease to function till the legal formality is met.

Dissolve all the assemplies. If the members can't abide the laws, they have no right to be in the assemblies as law makers. The ECP failed to do its job by not receiving their declartion of assets before the elections and certififying these law breakers as law makers.. Shame on the Sham systems of Pakistan.

Oh so only MQM is the clean party and a leader who every day talks about declaring assets has failed to submit his party members declaration. Voila. In New Pakistan all party members have to declare taxes except party members of PTI because we are making the new Pakistan. Thank you Mr Khan for providing your vision and guidance.

@Nizamuddin Ahmad Aali How can you give the credit for this to PTI? They did nothing to get this done. A large portion of the suspended lawmakers are from PTI (including Arif Alvi). PTI hasn't attended a single session of parlement but love taking creadit for everything good comming out of it.

@Zain : Which law are you talking about. There are 112 criminal cases pending against Nawaz Sharif and hundreds against Kulsoom Sharif for defrauding banks and concealing their assets. Default by denying to pay the loan back and still living like kings. Frankly in the land of laws the family should have been behind bars for a very long time.

Will not be able to attend assembly sessions ?? Ok fine, but where is the problem in this ? After all majority of our law makers do NOT attend assembly sessions except of course on a few...very few occasions. Why not....after all why not ...cancel their elections and de-seat all these defaulting MPs ? They should not only be de-seated and bye elections held but they should be disqualified for life. But ECP will argue that they do not have such powers. If so why ECP do not ask for more power if...if it REALLY wants to have any positive say in the matter ?

Submission of assets & liabilities is not enough, ECP or some higher authority needs to verify them to make sure they are not hiding them under some other relatives/subjects names. These assets list should also be published so that public can also make some judgement if they make sense and how (dis)honest their elected leaders are.

@Nizamuddin Ahmad Aali This is nothing to do with naya Pakistan of Imran Khan. Didn't you forget Sher Abid Ali stopped electricity of many govt offices including parliament for not paying electric dues. They are all now paid. All this before the dharnas and long marches

Good start, but it must not stop here. Members who declared their property value and source of earnings, needs to be investigated by an independent team(financial and legal experts), and any one who found guilty of falsifying their assets must be suspended as well. After competition of their term all members including VVIP's must submit their financials. It will be interesting to see these people getting broke while serving and still want to serve!!

The common man has every right to know the details of defaulters and their affiliations to the political parties. If the memberships have been suspended and members can not attend the assemblies then there is a chance of loosing the majority of the ruling parties in their respective assemblies. It is really very SHAMEFUL that the people who are THE LAW MAKERS do not follow the law themselves and do not even respect the institution (ECP) which has given them the HONOUR to be PARLIAMENTARIAN and lead the country.
