TORRENTIAL rain, accompanied by hailstorm and strong wind, hit several parts of Mardan district on the cusp of Oct 5 and 6, and heavily damaged standing crops of sugarcane, maize and several vegetables, causing millions of rupees’ loss to farmers, most of whom are poor.

In view of the heavy losses caused by the rain, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government should declare the affected areas as calamity-hit and conduct a survey to estimate losses so that the affected farmers can get financial assistance. Also, the provincial government should waive off agricultural taxes of the farmers.
