Pakistan capable of responding to Indian actions: Defence minister

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's defence minister said on Thursday that the country is capable of responding “befittingly” to Indian actions on the border after several days of clashes in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.
“We do not want the situation on the borders of two nuclear neighbours to escalate into confrontation,” Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said in a statement. “India must demonstrate caution and behave with responsibility.”
Defence minister's reaction comes against the backdrop of an earlier statement by his Indian counterpart Arun Jaitley where he 'warned' Pakistan to stop shelling in the disputed region.

“If Pakistan persists with this adventurism, our forces will make cost of this adventurism unaffordable for it,” Arun Jaitley had told journalists in New Delhi. “Pakistan should stop this unprovoked firing and shelling if it wants peace on the border.”
At least two Pakistanis were killed in latest firing by Indian troops along the working boundary between India and Pakistan, raising the death toll to 12 and injured to 43.
The situation along the India-Pakistan working boundary is still volatile as a heavy exchange of fire continues.
Military sources say that Pakistani troops are responding to the unprovoked Indian firing and are only targeting military positions and not civilian areas as claimed by the Indian military.

@Satish Kumar: this working boundry is 150+km area that starts after the LOC and is between Sialkot side of Pakistan Punjab and Jammu side of indian occupied kashmir. LOC is not recognised by both pakistan and india where as the working boundary is only recognised by India and not by pakistan. Any hostility on the working boundary is completely illegal as its not a 100% recognised border.

No Dogra Ji, it is a very old and legal term in this theater. It is one of the four legal statuses assigned to the demarcation between Pakistan and India. It is a part of demarcation in which Pakistan has claim on Indian occupied territory but not viceversa. Whereas on the LOC each side lays claim to the territory controlled by the other.

Both, the Indian and Pakistani military, say that they are not targeting civilians but majority of the casualties are civilian in the current conflict at the LOC. It appears that they are inadequately trained and their aim is off the mark.

I'm an Indian and reading newspaper from India and Pakistan. I am really confused who started the firing first as media reports blame each other. Its shame that in such a modern world we cannot resolve this problem. There is fight for Kashmir but what about the rest of the country. How stupid it is to get into 3 wars with each other since independence even with failing economy and food for the population. The area in Kashmir which is fought for has scare population when the millions in other parts of the country are suffering due to hunger, lack of medication, lack of work, corrupt - I feel so bad.

The "working boundary" is what Pakistan calls the line separating Sialkot from Jammu. According to Pakistan, because Jammu and Kashmir is disputed, the border separating Jammu and Pakistani Punjab is not an international border in the same way as the Radcliffe Line at Wagah.

We all are playing this war of words through replies and counter replies but think of those people who are being sacrificed at the border. Just because we are away from the conflict region and feel safe in our houses doesn't mean we react this way. Just appeal to both governments to call ceasefire ASAP and stop this killing. And be sympathetic towards each other - we both are poor countries with more than 80% of our population being below poverty. What sense does it make to waste our energy and money on fighting each other?!

First, find out the reason, if reason can be solve through talk then start the otherwise UN or middle east country can be third party to resolve the issue

I think its just a politics being played by both the nations.
And both the nations being told that the other nation is bombarding us,
hence we are using our Army to bombard them?
When will this fooling business top? It's high time both the nations wake up
and common people tell their respective Governments, stop wasting tax payer's money
and provide us basic services which you fail to provide anyway! Very disturbed to see in the
public forums people still cursing each other in the name of nationalism which is nothing but
propagated by the respective state actors to serve their own interest.

On a lighter note, it's nice to see how many Indians visit the Dawn website. I'm sure Dawn is very happy about that. On a more serious note, neither country needs problems on it's border (Pakistan more so) and therefore people should reflect on this and work towards calming the situation down.

There needs to be a combined , organized movement from the people in both country's against both sides politicians //-- people need to wake up on both sides --- politicians are the sole cause of this -- they use these tactics and slogans to gain popularity and every time people fall for it.
People on both sides should wake up and say NO to this unnecessary killings on both sides of the border.
I'm pretty sure people on both sides want peace.

I remember from past, they used to exchange flower baskets at Wagah border on the occasion of EID. But now since Modi is in the office, they are trading fires and dead bodies. I am not surprised as Modi has a reputation to live with.

@sid Being an Indian I have to say this, Dawn is one of the best news daily out there. Dawn is far ahead when compared to the mainstream Indian media (Modiji refers to them as News traders) in terms of objective and independent reporting. Also I have never seen Dawn twisting facts like Indian media. Even if they indulge in it, it is not noticeable. Just an example, I was observing their reporting these days. They have given both sides version while reporting the ongoing conflict in Kashmir. I personally like to have an independent version of any news. So I come here often. Thanks to Dawn and keep up the good work.

Calm down people, the world is not coming to an end. To my Indian friends: "diplomacy is done with velvet glove over iron fist". Modi knows this and he is just setting the tone for future productive diplomatic engagement.
To my Pakistani friends: "If you are so worried about Kashmiris offer them asylum in your country. India would be more than happy to take Hindus from Pakistan in exchange for that". We can call it the second partition and be done with it.
Let us bury the hatchet and forgive the past transgressions and go our own ways in building a better future for our populations, it is about time
