QUETTA: An earthquake jolted Surab and adjoining areas in Balochistan's Kalat district on Wednesday.

No casualties or material losses were reported. Its epicenter and magnitude was also not immediately known.

The tremors were felt in almost all villages located in the Surab Tehsil of Kalat district, locals told Dawn via telephone.

People came out of their homes in panic and moved towards deserted areas, Muhammad Anjum, a school teacher, said. Panic prevailed among the locals in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Balochistan is prone to natural disasters including earthquakes. Almost 80 per cent of Balochistan is situated in sensitive earthquake zone, Din Muhammad Kakar, a professor of geology department at Balochistan University said.

Kakar stated that Quetta, Chaman, Kalat, Mekran belt and other parts of western Balochistan were located in the sensitive earthquake zone.

Last year, an earthquake had claimed at least 356 precious human lives in Balochistan's sparsely populated Awaran district.
